Carrier bearing question

I asked about U joints yesterday and was advised Spicer was the best so I picked up 3 from the driveshaft shop. He looked at my carrier bearing since he said there was a choice of 2 different ones. Upon inspection he informed that I have neither of those but I have one with a split metal housing that the bolt centers are 5 7/8 as opposed to the other kind that is 6 1/2 and the bearing sits at different height. He said the kind I have is obsolete. Any one know what in the hell I am talking about and if so where I can get one. Thanks

Re: Carrier bearing question

You probably have the same kind I had in my 69 GMC. Everywhere I tried to get one said it was obsolete and none were available in universe. I ended up buying the newer style bearing and making some spacers so it would mount at the correct height. If you could post a picture of it , I could tell you for sure.

Re: Carrier bearing question

I think I've got the same kind. I need to replace it sometime fairly soon. Does it look like this?

Re: Carrier bearing question

Yep, that's just like the one I had. All you need to do is to get the newer "horseshoe style" bearing and make some spacers where it will be at the correct height.

Re: Carrier bearing question

You will have to get the new style unless you find a cross referance part number. Can you see a part number on that piece?

Re: Carrier bearing question

Check out Neapco P/N 212050x. Otherwise you just need the inside bearing diameter, find one with the bolt width you need, and shim to get same height as your original. Good luck!
