Are 6 lugs longer then the 5 lugs?

A friend of mine was wanting to change axles from his sons truck and wanted to use the 5 lug axles out of a parts truck i have here and he said that the 6 lug was about 3/8 of an inch longer then the 5 lug.Does this sound about right or could one of them had a rear end swap in the past? thanx for the help.

Boss... that's about right, 3/8 inch per side.
The wide axle was started sometime early/mid 70, but still has the 6 lug.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding Boss's post but wouldn't the mid 70's 6 lug axles be the same length as the 5 lug axles, and the early six lug axles be shorter than the mid 70's six lug and all of the 5 lug axles?

Yes, the early 70' six lugs were shorter than the later 70's six lugs. Thats why the late 70's will direct swap out inner axles and all the older ones make the brake drum stick out on the brake shoes.
They say you can use 73' up drums that are wider to remedy this.

I just reread the post (Boss) are you refering to the stud length being longer? or axle lengths?

I think it sould be just the opposite, 6 lugs should be the shorter one

Re: Are 6 lugs longer then the 5 lugs?

6 lugs are shorter. There was a thread in here a few weeks ago on ho he used the 70 6 lug because it was more narrow and he didnt have to adjust to much on the back space on his new wheels.
