Question h-4 headlights ?????

ok all,
i have been doing some thinking about "switching" over to the new style of headlights & the question(s) is why do the "kits" have a wiring harness or why do you need a wiring harness for them?? i have elec. fans as well as relays for my ac unit & i really don't want to add more relays to the system. can you get the new headlights without having to upgrade the wiring on our trucks??

thanks for the replys.....

The original wiring was not designed to take the extra ampereage capacity required by the newer lights. The extra draw on an inadequate size wire or corroded connections creates a potential fire hazard. Also the extra ampereage is being pulled through the original light switch which was not designed for the extra load either. Relays will turn the headlight switch into just that, a switch, very little draw on the switch and wiring system therefore protecting your circuits. We sell the lights with a high quality relay kit included. You can buy the lights without relays, but I don't recommend it.

Re: h-4 headlights ?????

I agree with Mike; using the supplied voltage from the switch to trip a relay and introduce power from a direct source is much safer

rodstored-72...
Why don't you want to add more relay's? They are the safest way to add accessaries in the older trucks.

Most relay's come with a hookup for two add on's and the power wire can be jumped from relay to relay which if tey are mounted close to each other it's a simple thing to add. My two cents worth anyway.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: h-4 headlights ?????

thanks guys,
i thought that was the reason(s) the wire rating, but i didn't know about the switch. my truck is not a daily driver & i am trying to keep the engine bay as clean & simple as possible. i guess i could make a relay "box" & hide all the relays (fans, ac unit & headlights) inside... i dunno i was just wanting a sound board i guess.

thanks again guys for the time & help....

on a side note do you guys think adding the lights are a good thing? (asthetic & safety) ????

Re: h-4 headlights ?????

in reality, adding relays to the normal sealed beams is a huge improvement.

Re: h-4 headlights ?????

I added the headlights a few year's ago and just added the relay's a few weeks ago. Made a big differance at night. Both of them. Once the cold air intake is back in place you can't see none of the wiring.

Re: h-4 headlights ?????

Go for it, the relays are the way to do it. With the relays supplying my H4's, they're almost as bright as my '04 VW headlights.
Asthetically, you can hide a lot of stuff on the core support without it being very visible if you wrap your wiring with black tape or loom and mount things low.

You are better off making your own than buying the LMC kit,... and then replacing the relays in 6 to 8 months.

I hate blue bulbs -- I once bought some high $$ Hyper-White blue bulbs (with a money-back guarantee!) and drove home (an hour over the mountain) and promptly removed them. The guy returned my money as promised. I couldn't see squat and later found out why. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...e/bad/bad.html

Re: h-4 headlights ?????

I have a set of blue bulb's in mine now, that I took out of my daughter's Eclipse. I can't tell a differance. Same watt as the clear that came with the tri-bar lights.

From Stern's site, if you are interested:

Osram, the well-established German lampmaker, sells a line of automotive bulbs they call "Silver Star". These are Osram's top-of-the-range headlamp bulbs, equivalent to Narva RangePower+50, GE Night Hawk, Philips VisionPlus, and Tungsram Megalight Premium. They produce the maximum legal amount of light while staying within legal power consumption limits. They have colorless clear glass.

Osram bought the well-established American lampmaker Sylvania in the early 1990s, so Osram is now Sylvania's parent company. Sylvania also sells a line of automotive bulbs they call "Silver Star", but it's not the same product. The Sylvania Silver Stars have blue glass. Light output is of legal levels, but as with all blue-filtered bulbs, you do not get more light from them. The Sylvania SilverStar bulbs have a very short lifetime, because the filament is overdriven to get a legal amount of light despite the blue glass.

Re: h-4 headlights ?????

I installed the H4 headlamps....have not yet installed the harness yet, but dont drive it at night untill summer. I also bought a HID kit for the truck as well..I will be installing those when the harness is installed. I will not drive another vehicle without HID's after having them in my last truck....Makes a huge diff.
