Steering wheel play

The steering wheel on my truck has a lot of up and down play in it. I removed the after market wheel and noticed the top column bearing popped out of the column. If I push it back down the wheel is fine. Is there anything that holds this bearing in place? Maybe something on the factory steering wheel? I can install some washers between the after market wheel and bearing to hold it in place but I would rather find out the correct way to fix this. Has anyone had this issue before?

Re: Steering wheel play

I'm not sure about your year but on the newer models they have a cup then a spring that sets on top of that. That spring then presses into the steering wheel lock ring.
