Speedometer noise
My first post here, tons of great info, but I cant find what I'm looking for. I just brought home a 66. It has had a 350/350 swapped into it. The speedometer cable was too short so I put in a longer one. The speedo is really noisey now that it is hooked back up. I pulled the instrument housing out this morning, no easy task cause it has a late model column in it that wouldnt give me clearance untill I dropped it down. The seedometer is making a grinding/scraping noise when it is turned by hand.
Has anyone had success lubing the speedometer assembly itself? There is a big swapmeet saturday where I might find a replacement if needed. I'd rather spend money on a few patch pannels that I need. Chopper |

Re: Speedometer noise
I had the same problem, so I soaked my stock speedo cable with WD-40. It has the spiral wrap, so the oil could penetrate. I also squirted some dielectric grease into the back of the speedo, where the cable attaches. To test, I attached the cable to the speedo and attached a drill to the end of the cable where it attaches to the tranny. I ran the drill in forward and reverse to ensure the oil/grease was fully covering all the moving parts. If this does not eliminate the noise, you may need a new speedo head. You can post in the Parts Wanted forum for a new speedo. Good luck troubleshooting...I hope this does the trick.

Re: Speedometer noise
I pulled the cluster from the dash and tore it down. I cleaned up the speedometer head and lightly lubed it. While it was apart I reset the miles to zero. Test drive went fine, can't hear the speedometer any more. Thanks for the replies.

ChopperDr:
Job well done...congratulations. Isn't it nice to look down at the speedo and see 000001? |
