What to paint frame with?
What do you guys recommend to use for painting my frame? POR, Powder Coat, or Spray paint? I am not looking for the shinny look i want a mat finsih look. Pictures of what you recommend would be good?
Thanks |

Re: What to paint frame with?
You have several options. Are you sandblasting?
If you are, consider powdercoat. Powdercoating is hard as nails, wont chip or flake if done properly, and is a lifetime finish. Way better than automotive paint. If you are not, and just plan to paint, Eastwood has several products such as "Rust Encapsulator" which is easy to apply. POR-15 is another viable option. I've seen some guys here on the forum use a newer product called "Rust Bullet" (it's silver and looks badass in pictures) which is similar to both Rust Encapsulator and POR-15 Make sure you read the instructions on whatever you choose, and wear nitrile gloves or similar. Do not leave the can open. POR-15 is supposed to harden instantly on contact with moisture, so ... it sticks to skin and you can ruin a whole can if you leave it even cracked a smidge.

Re: What to paint frame with?
I used Rustoleum on on of mine about 10 yrs ago and it's still holding out pretty good.
POR15 is a good product (pricey) and I've used it on other parts. The only thing I don't like about it is that if you get it on you, it's hell getting off once it dries... It's almost like a tatoo... |

Re: What to paint frame with?
I POR 15 all my frames, (they are not for show, just don't want them to rust, ) and haven't had any problems. Powdercoating is nice, but a little more pricey. Depends on what your goals are......

Re: What to paint frame with?
If you want something that will hold up well, and is cheap, and you mentioned matt finish- use John Deere Blitz Black paint. Google it (looks very appealing). It says it easy to touch up too; the one thing powder coat can’t do……
I think it like $17 a quart. I found this the other day searching JD lamps for my Land Cruiser and it defiantly has my attention! Hope this helps. s/t

Re: What to paint frame with?
What about Hammerite? I painted the back half of my longbed frame with it a while ago. It's pretty tough and covers any rust well. The only reason I'm not using it now is because the short frame I'm doing is really clean and I don't need to cover any perfections with the hammered texture.
I'm using Rustoleum Professional in the spray can now. The area I cleaned and painted the other day held up really well to the laquer thinner that I used to wipe the frame down when I finally finished cleaning it.

Here is a post on Rust Bullet, since it seems to be pretty obscure:

Re: What to paint frame with?
there is a place in gainsville that can powdercoat the whole thing if you dont have any one in mind to do the work, they preheat the frame then powdercoat then cure. most people will tell you that is a waste of time THEY are usually the ones doing the powdercoating (lazy) and they dont want it to last that long I guess, job security.
the thing with powdercoat is you cant have anything on the frame it has to be clean, i have not seen powdercoat on a frame that has not chipped. i usually mar hyde one step the frame then shoot S/S black and i can reshoot chips and scratches anytime. you will notice people from all over the country have different ideas of what to do with their frames. When was the last time you got snowed in? or the snow caked on your truck took two months to thaw out? |

Re: What to paint frame with?
I have had good results with GM reconditioning paint. $35 a gallon at your local dealer. Sandblast, open the can, stir, pour it in your paint gun. No priming or mixing and it has a geat satin finish.

Re: What to paint frame with?
I definitely like the rust bullet. I’ve used POR15 and don’t like it so much. There is a ton of prep work for the stuff too. Although I haven’t done any touch up, it seems like it would be a pain.
I have to admit that the JD paint looked like it would be easy to use. Tractors aren’t generally babied either. Here is some good info about with pictures…. http://crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/...tz_Black_paint s/t

Re: What to paint frame with?
Go to tractor Supply and buy their Rusty Metal primer and their Low Gloss Black Tractor Paint (add the hardener) and you get a real good result. In my opinion.
Here are some of my truck doing this.

Re: What to paint frame with?
Notice in the picture above it looks cloudy because my garage is real dusty.
It looks real clean when brushed off

Re: What to paint frame with?
I used Rustoleum, sprayed it with my cheapo gun, only had gloss, next frame I'm doing is a satin, should look better.
Kinda dark in shop, but looks good to me.
