Lightbulb Project Revival

Well it has been a while since I posted. I have been some what distracted and my truck has sat for too long....... well okay maybe not too long by most standereds but long enough for my family. I got this 84 c10 the first month of my senior year of highschool. I had it on the road and used it off and on through out that year. It was not my first c10( had an 85) but it was the first truck I owned that I really liked. Anways by the end of highschool it only saw carshow duty or the ocasional trip to the lake for the dogs to go swimming. Then she was prepped for winter storage and not driven since. I started it up this past summer and the waterpump was leaking and the tranny lost most of its fluid. Well I had other projects so i just left it in there. I know its not that long to sit but it is comming up on two years now. Well I had a lifted keep to get road ready only to find the frame was shot. Then i bought a few more tractors to restore and help fund the jeep. Once i sold the jeep after finding the frame issue i bought a 1956 willys wagon(long story). The 327 in the willys was seazied so i bought a 1962 willys parts truck for its 350 chevy motor. Well the willys took my trucks spot and It is time to get the old "blacky" going again.

The plan:
New water pump
Reseal entire transmission ( maybe a new torque converter or manual valve body)
Repaint the radiator
Put in some speakers(has radio but no speakers)
pull motor and tranny
New motor mounts (polly re enforced ones since the rubbers got ripped by the SBC 400)
Repaint engien bay
patch and undercoat the inner fenders
New weather stripping
Rear hoosier's or M/T drag radials
Some other little things

Other possible changes:
12 bolt 4:10 govlock rear end
Muncie 4 speed

I plan to get it leagal over March break so that i can go pick up a boat i built when i was in highschool. Then it will come off the road so i can pull the motor.
Again maybe not the biggest build but thought i would share what i am doing and maybe give some neat tricks or tips. The 1956 willys sat for 30 inside before i got it and I don't wanna see my truck doing the same. I know how much you all like pictures so here you go

The jeep(1989yj) with the rotted frame:

The 56 willys 28,000 orginal miles before we removed it from its resting place:

The 56 willys was full of nuts we found a dead mouse in the 327's cylander head:

First sun in 30 years:

My trucks as of this fall not the large pool of coolent I hate it sitting outside:

oh and here is the parts truck with the 78 chevy 350 Reading builds on here really motivated me to start to restore the willys for my dad

Re: Project Revival

Okay that is enough pictures for now. My first question is Who makes a quality waterpump? I would like to go better then stock if possible but not electric.
Thanks for all the input and it is good to see alot of new members on the board!

Re: Project Revival

Thansk. I know by most it is not that long but we have 3 drivers and 7 vehicals so it is getting alittle crazy. We just don't have the room and the neghborhood is not the kind where you could leave "projects" in the drive way. I know thebuild start is a bit off but hey while i am here at school i can order parts so on the week off i can get this thing going again.

Oh yeah stabil does work well but man they say 2 years and that is pushing it

Re: Project Revival

I'm glad to see you are getting your truck back on the road.

My Dad had one of those jeeps, 4WD, with a 283 when I was a kid. It was a blast. The rear window above the tailgate dropped down once when I was getting something out of the back. It hit me in the head HARD! My wife would probably say that explains a lot...

Thumbs up Re: Project Revival

That's not long at all my truck has sat for 5 yr's straight several years ago with only the occasional 60 to 80 mile drive maybe once a year but it never had any issues other than a weak battery it allways started up and performed fine.

As far as a H2o pump it depends if your talking about a performance or stock replacement.

Performance......i'd go with either a Aluminum GM or Edelbrock i have the GM PP one.

Stocker......i'd go with NAPA and avoid all the big chain auto parts stores junk.

I've allways loved the willys wagons and would love to have one some day your's dosent look to be in very bad shape and should make for a easy and quick resto.

Good luck.

Re: Project Revival

I've heard that Stewart brand water pumps are good. I have one in the box thats going on a built small block when it's finished. I bought their cast iron Stage 1 pump. It's about $70 and it has an equal flow design that delivers equal amounts of water to both sides, where a stock pump delivers more water to one side than the other.

I've been buying lifetime warranty pumps from Advance Auto Parts and have not had a problem with them, I think at $30 they are a good choice for a stock motor. For a high performance built, I thought that the equal flow Stewart pump was a good deal and extra insurance for $70.

Re: Project Revival

I wouldn't mess with patching the inner fenders, my right side had damage from a bad battery, I found like new ones on craigslist for 50 bucks, about 10 bolts and 1/2 hour and it was done. but I did primer and undercoat everything also. good luck bob

Re: Project Revival

Okay here is the story on the willys wagon for those who are interested. It was orginally from AZ and was silver and rusty orange. Then it was driven to NH in the early to mid 60's. In 1970 it was sold to a highschooler. He did the motor swap, repainted it and put on the slots and new tires and got it ready for a cross country trip with his buddy. Well they got to the tip of VT and decided it was geared too low or something else and drove home taking his dads blazer instead After that life got busy and it sat in the same spot. Last registed in 1975. Sadly the owner died a few years ago. From the looks of it he was getting it ready to run again or had an ignition issue because all of the spark pluggs where out and the cap and coil look brand new. So it had been sitting for 5 years with no pluggs and the motor is locked up solid. After viewing it we struck a deal with his wife and now are slowly getting it road ready. I would love a frame off but really just want to get it going for now and go from there. It is crazy to think every unrestored willys i have seen has a rotted lower tailgate even out in AZ and this one has no rust at all. Also that the originall motor was removed with only 25,000 miles and the 327 was only 2 to 3 years old when it was installed.

I guess after getting the willys i did not want to see my truck sitting for too long for fear that it would not be on the road for a long time.

Hey 84,

If you plan on keeping that seized 327..................

You know that it is still good and can be broken loose get some Marvels Mystery Oil and pour about an oz in each cylinder let it sit for a day and try to rotate the assembly a small amount you may need to do this for about a week or more if you have a flywheel rotation tool use it instead of the balancer bolt cuz you will probably snap it off.

I agree. You might also try ATF. I know folks who have been successful with both. I think I would leave the plugs out when you try to turn it over to make sure you don't break anything when it comes loose.

Thanks for the tip..we used a mix of ATF and Marvail in each cylander. Left the plugs out and let it sit. waited a week and added more. then we tried to rock the crank. it did not move. then we tried the harmonic balancer bolt to find that it was broken off. Then we tried the starter motor and then tried the drag in gear. It rolled untill the clutch bit in and then just dragged the wheels. We then pulled a head off and soaked it some more. then hit the piston with a block. it still did not turn so i am gonna pull it and drrp the pan and take out the crank so i can get a better look.

Also 87 Stepper
kerosene and diesel work well too

Re: Project Revival

Looks like a long water pump. You will need to buy one for a serpentine application though. They don't flow the same direction as the older non serpentine systems do.

Re: Project Revival

right they flow in reverse direction. It would really help if i had the part number or could remember what year the surp set up was off.

A question for you guys in the reverse direction do the heads get cooled first?

Thanks
