I want a quiet truck!!!

I'm getting ready to take the truck down to the local exhaust shop and have the exhaust system installed. I want the truck to be quiet but at the same time I need mufflers that flow well.

I'm running a ZZ383 GM motor and will be installing elec. cutouts for those times I want it to be loud.

Anyone have experience with quality mufflers that will meet my desires?

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

Thrush Turbos or Flowtech Raptors flow decent and are mild. I have run them both on different cars and trucks and they are about the mildest I've found. They don't have the interior resonance that a lot of others have.

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

i know that dynomax and magnaflow are the best dyno/race proven flow through design out there, they are a flow through design using perforated pipe the same size as the inlet/outlets so that you dont compromise the flow. they also utilize high temp resistant ceramics and fiberglass for insulating against noise inside the actual muffler, around the pipe which is a benefit instead of baffles and chambers like a flowmaster runs. as for quiet... the dynomax's are a bit more quiet, and they both (dynomax and magnaflow)have really nice tone to them....price wise check out this linkwww.shopmufflers.com/, this will give you an idea price wise within a few dollars of what you might spend for your mufflers. i've been scouting the right set-up for my truck for about a week now.
i hope this helps!!
flow and power vs noise and restriction

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

Depends how much power you are going to make. I have the Dynomax Hemi Turbo mufflers in 2 1/2". That's about the quietest free flowing muffler you will find. If you need 3", you may want to look into some Dynomax RV mufflers, easy if you have a leaf spring truck. Here it is at Jegs:
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...10002_26260_-1

Walker actually has a catalong that shows flow rates so you can determine if a muffler will flow as much as you need. None of the other mufflers will be this quiet.

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

the only problem with those very very nice electric cut-outs is that when you run them on an engine putting out so much power and heat is that the valves and gaskets fail after about 9mo-1yr. i had these on a camaro with a 427 stroker in it. gave me 9 months first go around and the second warrantied set lasted about 1 year, thats when i asked the exhaust gods for an answer...... well, they said to eliminate the problem. 500 bucks later i ran just 3" pipe with cut-outs and flanges bolted shut. those to fail after some time. just some first hand experience i thought i'd share with ya. they are way trick and really scare the crap out of stop light would be racers when you open them up. but when they leak your car sounds like a 3 cylinder motor running open headers...lol

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

I went down to the local shop and told them that my truck would be a daily driver and I want it to be a sleeper. so we put magnaflow SUV type mufflers on it. we ran duals with 3" exhaust. Wen I get it back together all the way we will run it all the way out the back.

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

The Hushpower mufflers look trick but the price, $$$$$. I was looking at the Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers. Big difference in price, $52 for the Dynomax or $179 for the Hushpower.

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

The Dynomax ST's are definitely the quitest mufflers. A little too quiet for me.

I run Thrush Turbos on the 70 and with full pipes and 3"x18" magaphones it has a very nice semi-quiet tone, but is also very healthy sound at idle and certain speed ranges.

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

Magnflow or Dynomax Ultra-flow are basically the same thing. I went with Magnaflows on my truck from hooker aero-chambers, and it is about 1/10th as loud as it used to be. I'll be putting up some before and after sounds some day.

X or H pipes help keep noise down too.

You got it, "A quiet truck", until I want to be heard!!

Steven, you need to see the truck before you pass judgment.

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

"X" pipes will help quiet things as well. Shown is a 2-1/2" system off stock manifolds. Mufflers unknown, but still in good shape. I can't hear the exhaust when I'm up at the front of the truck or when I'm driving, only when standing at the rear.

I've got headers, thrush turbos with 3 1/2" x 18" tips, and it's about perfect for me. Not too loud cruising, but will really TALK when u step on it.

I think you would like the Dynomax #17749. It's a 2 1/2" offset in/ offset out with a 20" case. To me, they're perfect. Quiet, but plenty of volume when you "mash the gas".

i've got those exact mufflers on my truck right now!
i'm runnin 2.5 aluminized mandrel bent with an h-pipe to those st's dumping out turn downs before the rear end. its pretty deep at idle and gets kinda tinny and high pitch between 3500-7500 rpms.... i dont like em but it could be the turn downs!

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

My personal experience is to get the pipes out from under the car/truck. Good sound insulation is a must! I've got header mufflers on right now, with about two feet of 3" pipe dumping just aft of the cab (temporary set up) And as loud as that can be resonating through the cab at the wrong rpm/load, I can hardly hear the exhaust over the road noise at highway speeds

Re: I want a quiet truck!!!

I had the Dynomax Super Turbo's a few years back on my Cutlass with a Rocket 350 and headers, and it sounded great, but by no means was it quiet.

That is about the cleanest exhaust pipe install I have ever seen on a daily driver. Very nice!

they are great! I have 1 on my truck. that's right, ONE. I ditched the heddmans and 2 1/2" x 12" glass packs a year ago and went to 80's style bottom log manifolds. the pipe bender guy made up a Y pipe and put the 2 1/2" Hushpower just before the axle with a turn-out behind the LR wheel. then I went on a 1500 mile road trip pulling a big U-haul trailer. no power difference between before and after. it is quiet inside but has a noticeable tone at the rear, until I get on it. then it talks.
