master cylinder

Has anyone upgraded or put a newer master cylinder in a 67-72? I stripped my vehicle down and the one I have is pretty grimmy and rusted. When I reassemble it I would like to put a newer one on, possible a 3/4 ton for a little more braking power to handle the bigger wheels. I tried a search but didn't come up with anything

Re: master cylinder

not sure a bigger master cylinder is going to give you more braking power. You may want to try power brakes. That seems the best way to add more braking.

Re: master cylinder

a 3/4 ton or one ton won't go on without some replumbing, they are plumbed bass ackwards compaired to the 1/2 ton.

Thanks guys, if it isn't going to be straight forward, I will just have to see if I can get a cleaned up one.

Don't shortcut yourself on this one. They're relatively cheap compared to the cost of "no brakes." Many years ago I tried to clean one up and rebuild it. Spent more time on it than a remanufactured one or new cost and then it failed on me. Thank God it was on a country road... Pretty scary

Re: master cylinder

yeah just go to your local parts place and get a new one, i did for like 30$, works good, you must be thinking about using a 3/4 ton / 4x4 booster, i have heard they are a dual diaphram booster that will give you a better assist that the single diaphram c10 variety. the only way you will gain better braking ability is to upgrade the size of the disc, size of caliper (pad) or clamping force of the caliper (multiple pistons), same theory on the back. the booster is only an assist, it helps your leg. this can translate into better braking i suppose, because you can jam that pedal down faster than no booster, so you may stop sooner than without a booster. good luck.

Re: master cylinder

grab a hydroboost unit out of a junkyard. I found a complete setup with the pump and all for $75, which I havent yet had time to install. Do a search about it, you should return several threads. The brake system runs off your power steering pump and works much better than P/B
