crew cab onto suburban chassis - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello all.
Went looking at rigs today. Found a 1986 Suburban 3/4 4x4 suburban with a fresh 6.5 n.a. diesel. The downside is that the body is rusted out. To the point seeing ground thru the rear fenders from the inside. Also found on Craig's list a crew cab cab of about the same vintage that the ad says is not rusted out. The idea is to put the crew cab cab onto the 'burb chassis and make a flat bed to finish of the rear. How many body mounts would I have to move to make this work?

Not sure about the Suburban frame but in my opinion it would be easier to get a crew cab frame and chop it, that way you don't have to mess with the cab mounting and you can space the rear wheels from the back of the cab as little or as much as you want.

You won't have a very large flat bed if you use a Suburban, probably like 4 feet long if that, basically the lenght of the burb behind the rear door minus about 6". The body mounts will be the same for the most part. If the Crew isn't rusted, just chop it down. You will only have to worry about how long/short you want it and then weld it together. A Burb is 2" SHORTER than a Long bed truck.

isnt there a frame issue tho? i tried to put a trailer hitch from a burb on my 1/2 ton and the burb frame is wider.. i dont think there is a difference in the frames amongst pickups in relation to width so if that is the case the crewcab body may not be boltable to the burb frame easily

The frame is different from basically the rear of the cab back on both. I can reconfirm this when I get home on mine, but he is going to build a bed for it, so the rear really doesn't matter....

If you could re-structure a bed down to 4-feet or whatever, it would be a real interresting take on the new ones they sell like that.
