Engine Tweakers - Help Please
350 (now a 360)
HEI. Aftermarket intake. Edelbrock carb. If the vacume advance is hooked up, it clicks loudly. Example - when going around corners off the gas. Have been told that I need a VA that's for a vehicle without EGR.??? I've take the vacume line and plugged it. Everything runs fine, but the MPG really sucks. I should buy stock in my favorite gas station. New vacume advance? Vacume lines hooked up to the incorrect side of the carb.? Vacume mis-spelled.? Many thanks Paul |

first of all egr has nothing to do with vaccum advance.egr is not need however vaccum advance is almost a neccesity.try putting some di electric grease on the advance weights under the rotor in the distributor and hook the vaccum to full manifold vaccum. what kind of intake do u have. if u have an edelbrock there should be a spot right behind the carb that will be plugged off. i have my advance hooked to the left hand vaccum port of my edelbrock 750 carb and have no probs at all.

Left side as you are looking at it from the front, or left side as you are sitting in the truck?

first thing..its "vacuum".. lol.. now this clicking, is it detonation? like if you use bad gas? I would get the crane adjustable curve kit..it comes with an adjustable vacuum canister and a limit plate along with some springs and pretty good instructions...install the limit dohickey...and put it in the middle of its movement..this will be about 12 degrees limit..set timing at 10 degrees BTDC...hook up the vacuum line to full manifold vacuum...check timing..it should be around 22 degrees rev motor to 3000 rpm and hold for a few seconds ..check timing you should have 34-36 degrees total in at 3000... if it comes in later than that...use the springs to adjust accordingly...this is a good base line time...every engines a little different..mine likes 14 deg. initial..all in by 2700 rpm...good luck

Many thanks. I'll check.
It's not detonation. It's a mechanical clicking. Maybe I'll just turn up the radio. No matter how I have it hooked up, though, the VA should have some effect on MPG, right? Thanks again. Paul |
