Sound Mat Question,

I'm getting ready to install my sound mat and was wondering how far to the edge of the door jam did you put your mat?

There is a picture of Kevin's truck, but I can't tell where it stops.

I would think it should stop right before the valley for the door seal? Pics would be great.

Thanks. Thats where I thought to stop. I hope it stops raining by monday, so I can roll the truck out and start installing the sound mat.

I was trying to put some parts on today, but my other computer (with my part inventory and location list) crashed the other day and is out for repair. I did not feel like search 40+ boxes for the parts I was looking for.

Re: Sound Mat Question,

Okay, It took me about 8 hours, but I'm done. I even did the inside of the doors. It turned out really nice. But I have a question, since I have put on the sound mat, do I still need to put in the firewall pad kit? (pictured below).

Re: Sound Mat Question,

Wow, that looks nice. As for the firewall pad, I believe the only function is for sound and heat, and you have already covered that - I would say no you don't need it. It would just make it that thicker up on the firewall.

Re: Sound Mat Question,

Well, I can't really help you out on the pad kit. I do love that yellow and I would change the color of mine, but for the last 12 year since I bought my 67 my buddies have called my truck "Big Green" so its hard to change that color...lol. I would like to stop burning my passengers up and these old trucks get really hot. I know that Dynamat is pretty steep in price but its good stuff but I think the cheaper stuff would be just as good. What brand does everyone have? Where did it come from?

Re: Sound Mat Question,

I installed "Hushmat" in my truck up to the inside edge of the channel leaving it open for wiring, etc. I also installed it on the inside of my doors and on the roof under the headliner. As far as the firewall pad goes, you don't need it but if you want too install it, it can't hurt. It will help cover up the sound deadener because the carpet usually doesn't go up high enough and you will see the silver mat under the dash.

I have a fairly beefy smallblock with headers and loud mufflers. With the windows rolled up, I can hardly even hear it run. This stuff works awesome... Worth every penny.

I agree, and it is needed if you are using a carpet kit to cover all the sound mat.

Re: Sound Mat Question,

I agree with hiding the silver from the sound mat, so I will cover it.

But what about Heat Resistant Carpet Padding? Does that go all the way up the firewall aswell or just to the end of the firewall pad kit? Doesnt the carpet have padding on the back aswell?

I read the Sound Deadner Showdown article http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/
and determined that Second Skin Damplifier would work best for me. It is comparible to Dynamat Xtreme, and a bit cheaper

After reading that article I used 2nd Skin also. I am very pleased with it. I did the floor, firewall, back of the cab, under headliner and inside the doors, love it. Just makes the truck feel much more solid. The only problem is that I can't impress the young girls with my booming stereo, because you can't hear the music outside, lol...
