Unhappy Broken Door Handle

The Driver's door handle broke on the '69 C10. The button got smacked, and now the handle looks fine, but the button free floats inside. It looks as if the handle has a retainer or something that holds the thumb button in place and that is what is broke and lets the button float. (is this how it works)

I see that Classic sells the pair for $60. Has anyone tried these out? How well do they fit/work? does it come as one unit, or as parts to put together, whatever. (I guess what I mean is do you know if it will it solve my problem?)

Or does anyone know where I can get one otherwise? I am keeping my eyes peeled at the local u-pull it place, but these trucks are showing up there less frequently these days.

Thanks guys,
Chris

Re: Broken Door Handle

i was just checkin ebay out just now...and there is left hand and right hand door handles on ebay right now for like 20 some bucks.... lmc has some but they might be a high price...if you dont wanna fix it right away you can do what i did...i took out the thumb piece button and then its just a hole and then you stick your finger into the hole and push the lever that the thumb button presses...it dont look great but it works

Re: Broken Door Handle

When I got my truck my drivers door was the same way. There is a spring and metal piece that goes behind the button. It is held in place with a tab system. Look in the bottom of the door and if your lucky those pieces are there. Just put it back in position and use a small hammer to bend the tabs back or use a spot weld to hold it together.

Good Luck

I have the repo's on the white truck. They fit & work OK but the hole for the bolt that holds them to the door is drilled at the wrong angle, so they can be a pain getting bolted up. Maybe this has been corrected by now or someone makes them that are correct....

You can try what Robert8096 said. I have repaired them this way. You can't weld them though because the handles are pot metal.

Re: Broken Door Handle

I stand corrected. LockDoc is right you can't use a spot welder. I used a small torch and a brazing rod.

Welcome to the world of '67! The '67 door handles are different than '68-'72. The reinforcement plate inside the door is different, and the the screw holes in the handle are straight in, not at an angle like the '68-up handles.

Re: Broken Door Handle

Thanks for the advice guys. I may try to look again and see if the pieces fell in the door or something. Or ebay. I'm not sure why I didn't look there before classic anyway...

And Tim, the idea of skipping it has been brought up as well... But I'd rather have it look/work properly. Although it might depend on how cheaply the handle can be found

Thanks again fellas.

Re: Broken Door Handle

I replaced mine on my "70" as they were pitted and the pass. side broke the same way as yours. I was happy with everything except the chrome. The finish is very thin, but chrome shops will not back up work with these type of handles where the button moves in and out. They like things that are disassembled. So if you get a good original make sure your also happy with the finish.

esll.

Re: Broken Door Handle

It can easily be repaired with donor parts. The problem usually is that the spring gets fatigued and either breaks or allows the button to travel too far and get dislodged. You can still push what the button pushed if the button isout of the way.
