exhaust manifold?

Putting on new dual exhaust and have a problem, I got 4 of the 6 studs out of my manifolds, but 2 were super thin and broke. i drilled and tried a screw extractor with no luck. Any suggestions at this point? Who sells manifolds at a decent price? Not looking to use headers. Shes a little too loud coming out of the heads...LOl

well if the stud didnt break flush with the head put some penetrating oil on there let it soak overnight then put some heat on there and take some vise grips put them on there ive also heard if you hit the stud with a hammer it can break it loose but ive never resorted to that but check the parts board for those manifolds

If your running the 4X4 setup, strait down, stop over I have at least 2 sets...J.

Dontchya just get all sorts of bent when a manifold or water pump bolt snaps off in the block? At this point you could keep workin' at getting the stud to bust loose or you may have to just drill the whole thing out and heli-coil the beeoch!
As far as inexpensive manifolds are concerned....check your local Craigslist, Ebay, Wrecking Yards, etc, etc. If you want new ones just about any of the site vendors such as GMC Pauls, Classic Heartbeat, Brothers, LMC, or the like should have them- although they ain't cheap. Another alternative to repoped original style are these.....available from Speedway Motors:

if the stud is broke off flush with the manifold, if you or a friend has an arc welder go to a welding supply shop @ buy a stick of missle rod. clamp manifold in vise@ weld a 3/8flat washer to the stud,then weld a 3/8 nut to the flat washer,let cool a few seconds take a 9/16 wrench @ it should turn out. I did this to my manifold and have used this trick several times with good results. or you could take it to a welding or machine shop @ they would probably help you.Good luck

Another trick is to get the area cherry red hot, it helps to release the bolt.
If all else the steel will usually melt before the cast and can be torched out and then run a thread tap to clean the hole.

in the past i've just ground the borken one off flush, drilled a smaller whole in the broken bolt, and taped for a smaller bolt with a big shoulder.

all good suggestions. its a 2 wheel drive, bent style. I had the manifold glowing, still broke flush. i already drilled about a 3/16 hole in em trying the screw extactor, so I may drill it out further and try to re-thread, i will post pics when shes back together...

weld a nut to the end of it and let it cool then pull it out by turing a wrench works great for lots of other things i jsut took out a broken bolt out of my rear end that way works great

Take a cutting torch and blow the broken stud out since the hole is tapped all the way through. It sounds crazy, but it works if you do it right. The broken stud will melt long before the cast iron will.
All you need to do then, is clean out the threads with a tap.

If your hole is in the center, keep drilling with larger drills each time till you get to 21/64. Then run a tap down it.

Well, I'll toss this out there, again.

If you can get a vise grip on the broken bolt, heat the bolt with a propane, or acetylene torch & get it good & hot.
Hit the bolt near the cylinder head with some wax (bees wax is preferable, paraffin works fine, though) & then immediately try to back the bolt out with the vise grips.

If the bolt is broken flush, get a set of "left hand" twist drills (Snap-On, or MAC should have them; & yeah, I know that's EXPENSIVE!!) & drill the broken bolt.
The end of the bolt is harder than the rest, & sometimes you can get lucky.
When the drill hits the hardened part, it will bind up & back the bolt out of the hole.

As an aside, some of you folks may think this stuff is crazy, but I'm in my 60's.
Back "in the day", we had to learn to improvise on a lotta stuff, or be relegated to "shank's mare" for transportation.

Y'all now have my .02 on several things.

P.S. I forgot to mention, when the frozen bolt is hit with the wax, that the wax is "sucked" into the threads, lubricating them; & hopefully making for an easier extraction.

I was able to get the studs out by drilling them out until just the threads remained(after the screw extractor didn;t work0, heated em up red and worked them out, cleaned up my threads and installed the new studs. Thanks for all the insight....i can wait to wake up the neighbors with my new dual exhaust, it had the stock pea shooter before...
