My new "GEM"

Well guys, I finally got around to getting some pics up of the new ride. It is a '68 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4. It has the V-6 and three on the tree. It also came with a working tommy lift. I went to pic it up on Christmas eve about 160 miles from here. We made it about 20 miles when we blew a tire on the trailer(forgot to bring a spare), and had to drive it the rest of way home. I made it back with no problems. So far I've replaced the heater core, hoses, blower motor and some other misc. parts. I was out four wheelin' it today and it is suprising how much snow it will go through.
Right now I'm trying to decide if I should keep it or sell it to help fund other projects. Here are some pics.

I would definitely keep that bad boy!! I'd love to a 4x4 with a V6.

If you do sell it sell it in one piece, don't part it out.

Re: My new "GEM"

By the way. If I may ask a question about the truck in the photos? I have never seen a shield over the E-brake handle under column like that before. That is cool. GMC thing or custom?

Re: My new "GEM"

that piece on the e-brake normally came on the higher end models on both chevy and GMC in 67-68 with the big lever e-brake. it covered up the the teeth that held the handle in place when you pulled it to apply the brake

Re: My new "GEM"

chevy had them too. It was in the CST package...maybe one of the lower packages too, this one is obviously just the custom option package and it has it, but I see a few parts that have been swapped/added, so it may not be original.

Re: My new "GEM"

Ya, I'm not sure about the e-brake shield. It was on there when I bought it. This is the first one that I've owned that has one. I like the pickup, but it doesn't have p/s or p/b, and it makes it kind of a chore to drive. I have three other four wheel drives, and as alot of you know, too many projects means nothing gets done. I would diffenately not part it out though. It's the same old thing, one minute I'm going to sell it, and the next I'm not.

Re: My new "GEM"

Man, finding another 67 or 68 GMC Big Block V-6 like that with 4x4 would be a chore to say the least, and with the torque that the motor has, it will tow just about anything and could crawl over just about anyting, GAS, now that's another story

Re: My new "GEM"

looks like a nice find. If that is the truck from over at DL I was going to have a look at it last fall but deer hunting got in the way. What kind of rpms does it turn on the hiway? I was worried about what it would turn on the hiway.

Ya, its geared to pull a house off its foundation, not interstates. It cruises at 60 around 3000 rpms. The V-6 is rated at 3400 max rpms, so it doesn't leave you much. It was the one by DL, I couldn't believe nobody had bought it when I called about it.

You could get either a 305 or a 351, mine is the 305.

Re: My new "GEM"

Hey Longhorn Man,
It has bigger crank journals and weighs more than a 454. Plus that V6 block size went up to a 478 ci. Should we call that a small block?
