Smile HEI coil in cap dizzys

I want to dump the pertronix kit and install a regular HEI dizzy but it seems like it wont fit my truck. It looks like it will hit the firewall the engine sits back on my truck. Is this normal? have a 305 in it . pics would be great.

Re: HEI coil in cap dizzys

The HEI distributor fits nicely in the C-10 model trucks but in the K-10 trucks it is a very tight fit. The distributor wires will hit the firewall in the K-10's but you can still use them.

Here is a pic of an HEI in my son's 72 Burb 4x4. As seen in the pic it is a tight fit!

why do you want to get rid of it? I'm wanting to replace my new HEI with a pertronics or something similar.

Re: HEI coil in cap dizzys

your 305 is in the 6 clyinder location... or 4X4 location... either way to word it, it's the same holes.
It'll fit back there, but it's tight.
Go for it, best thing you can do IMO.

because it took a mean S@#$!!, and I've only had it for about 2 years. I think the original HEI's last way longer than that and I can't see myself replacing this darn thing every 2 years. waiting for 1/2 price sale at my local pick a part to go hunt for one.

I guess I would have to stick the dizzy in there without the cap on it first, right??

I think MSD's got a low profile model that might make it easier. Probably not cheap though...

Right, well you'd do that anyway because you need to see the rotor as you lower the disrtib into it's final position,to make sure it's pointing where you want it (#1 or wherever it was when you removed the old one).

The main advantage to the GM unit IMO, is any parts store will have the parts on hand. No one will have the aftermarket stuff.

Re: HEI coil in cap dizzys

just wondering, do these trucks run a ballast resistor to go to the coil or is this just for the earlier trucks?? If so, pics would be nice to show how to connect with pertronix kit if I decide to keep this in.

The HEI is the way to go on these trucks. I have been buying complete units off the net for $55-60 shipped to my door. These are overseas units (china) have one running in it second year now with no problems. Just my 2 cents!!!

any idea whether that one will fit in 4x4 blazer?

Also, I am still unclear: yes or no, The HEI dizzy can be physically installed in a 4x4 k5 without engine removal? Can I get it in there by myself from the top, or do I have to slide the engine fwd to do it? bone stock, no body lift.

Thanks!

got one in my blazer, one of the first things i did to it, you might need to install the dizzy then the cap, and yes the wires do touch the firewall, but i have no prolbems in 3-4 years since i installed it.

Re: HEI coil in cap dizzys

Call me cheap.....I have an old cast iron dist (mid 60's 283) in my 383. With a recurve/adjustable vac advance, Pertronix Ignitor, & plugged to an ACCEL super coil......I have seen that motor run 7200, & not skip a beat . Pertronix had a couple different ignitors . The lobe sensor was a little sensative to too much voltage(liked 8 or 9 volts on the resistor wire). The "flying magnet" setup runs full battery voltage (said to work from 8 - 16 volts), & is a pretty nice pc. You can run the hei, & the only plus I see is that if you breakdown on the road, parts are available (pretty much anywhere)......or you can run what you have,& toss a spare in the glove box. If you break down on the road, you can swap it out , as easy as swaping points/condensor....crazyL

Thats good to hear, thats what I have to use in mine!
If there is a failure will other HEI parts fit? just wondering, I'm thinking of getting a spare module to keep in the glove box.

Re: HEI coil in cap dizzys

it looked like a GM HEI to me, but I didn't try fitting GM parts on it.
Honestly, I think the whole module thing is a bit blown outta proportion. Sure, it wouldn't hurt to throw one in the glove box... but I've never had one go bad myself, and this burb is the first new HEI I've ever had... everything else always got junk yard units.

Most of what I have seen on for problems on the GM HEI , are broken wires on the pickup coil(after many moons). the vac advance "walks" those wires , & over the yrs, they get brittle & break. The other prob I have seen is that the centrifical advance will stick (also after many moons). Not a big issue, just a little clean & lube. All in all, the HEI is a good pc.....I wouldnt worry about the HEI module, you can get it just about anywhere, & chances are that you wont burn it......what I was refering to was the Pertronix unit, you cant get that one in BFI (bum f,ed Idaho) crazyL
