Wow, that looks like a little bit of a challenge. Nothing you can't handle though! That's a good start for a project. I like the shifter pin especially!

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
well got into the engine and found a issue, actually a few. for starters they didnt use head gaskets, next i got the numbers ran on the block and heads, and the heads are 305's but the block is 350. And when i was removing the pushrods i found that one was bent. So i got everything ready to pull the heads and hopefully there isnt internal damage.

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
lets see, no head gaskets for one, tranny linkage held on by zip ties, all kinds of miss matched bolts, they used foam insulation to fix a cab corner the list goes on

Dammit. I thought Fedx would be the better choice over Uncaring Package Shippers. That and it didn't have to ship far. I would liked to of found a bigger box- but finding one it would fit in at all without being the size of a refrigerator box was tough.

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
Berencam. Is this the truck you bought to replace the wrecked one? Or is this a 3rd one?
And Lord help us if that votech class was the ones who did all the "repairs" to this truck. Engine, tranny linkage and all? No head gaskets and it actually ran and held coolant? It's nothing you can't handle. Just a little more work than you might have counted on. If you have some decent 350 heads now would be a good time to put them on as the small chambered 305 heads might make it ping a bit. I put some on a 327 years ago and it was just too much compression and I had to keep the timing retarded to keep it from pinging and it made it real sluggish. Just a bit of info for your consideration.

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
yes boog this is the one i bought then the guy went back on his word, well i held him to his end of the bargain and he decided to take a final 500 and it was mine. So i ended up paying 1k for it. Its not to bad of shape but im afraid the engines going to be to gone to repair in the truck.(guess that means ill be buying a engine hoist its my birthday in a few days anyway hehe) But ill find out what kinda real damage there is to the engine when i take the heads off tonight.
On the 350 heads mater, i dont have a set, and not enough cash to get one right now. but my plan is to get it running and out of the storage unit then do a head swap later(when im not paying 100 a month for the unit) |

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
Ah. So did you actually hear it run? Still plenty good deal for the money.

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
got the heads pulled off last night and i didnt see any cracks in the heads or block. Also since there was a bent pushrod i was worried of bent valves, pitted pistons, but they are fine too. The head block surface is very dirty and has paint over spray and debris all over. So it looks like the engine is going to be ok. going to clean the surfaces and reinstall.

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
It's too clean down in there for it to have run very much B. How did the plugs look? If the pistons aren't a floppin around in the cylinders and no bent valves a new gasket set and it might run out alright. There's hope for it.

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
Make sure the intake bolt in the area of the bent push rod is the correct length, wouldnt be the first time I have seen a little longer than correct length bolt used which presses against and bends the pushrod.

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
Bolts all seem fine. I got to the truck today and did some work on it. Pulled the radiator and all pulleys. Then pulled the harmonic balancer and installed a new one. I decided to go ahead and buy new heads so i wont have problems down the road with the high compression. They should be in tomorrow. The are re-maned 350 76 cc heads. It was my 21st birthday today so i didn't get too much done on the truck. but hopefully i should get the pulleys, belts, column(needs painting also) all installed tomorrow, mabee get the heads on if i have enough time and they show up soon enough. Will post pics tomorrow.
on a side note, is there any reliable way to check a radiator for leaks other than just hooking the hoses up and crossing your fingers? |

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
A pressure tester works great but if the radiator is out of the truck, you would have to make caps for all the inlets/outlets.
Just make sure you watch the lengths of your intake bolts when you go back in,I have seen way too many guys use a longer than needed bolt and in a certain hole they will make contact with a pushrod and cause a bent one.Just check.

Re: 1970 c10 resto(2nd attempt)
Well got a ton done today, i got my new heads on and torqued, got the steering column painted and installed, changed the thermostat, and temp sensor, gaped all plugs, installed all studs in intake for the carb, installed the carb, installed the vacuum elbow in the intake and a whole lot more. If things go good i might get to turn the key in a couple days. Heres lots of pics with todays progress.
What is the procedure for installing rocker arms, adjustment before startup and after. Also if anyone has a auto linkage picture id appreciate it if you posted it. Mine was in pieces from the p/o and i have no clue how to put it back together. Last question, is it advisable to sand a coat headers. The ones i have have severe surface rust and im afraid if i dont do anything about it it will eat a hole right in them. |
