New 350 crate motor delivered today!
I noticed some oil on the end of the crank. Is this normal with new crate motors or could it be a leak?...thanks Rick

They usually give it a light coat of oil to stop flash rusting in storage.

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
I have an edelbrock manifold and carb. The carb is a 1405 600 CFM. I forget which manifold it is off the top of my head. Some day it will actually fire up too. I'm getting there.

I don't think they put Vortec heads on the 260 HP crate...

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
I don't think GM makes a vortec headed crate that has fuel pump rod provisions.
Last time I checked they were all over 2,000.00 too. |

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
Nice motor - I have that one in my truck, they run smooth, and for now it's got all the power I need. I think you'll be very happy with it.

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
Performer EPS and Edelbrock #1406 would be my recommendation.

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
The best set up, IMO, is always going to be a 4bbl Q-Jet Carburetor. Go to this site where all of the riddles of the Q-Jet have been solved. www.smicarburetor.com. Do your research, and you'll find that the Q-Jet is a superior design, and performs better in efficiency and power. The guys at SMI have a great reputation for the product they sell. I have yet to hear a single bad story about buying one of their carbs. It's fine to use an Edlebrock performer Dual Plane intake. Those are said to be slightly better than the stock Non-EGR Iron intakes. The main benefit to using an aftermarket aluminum intake is the weight, and heat dissipation. They apparently flow slightly better as well, but yield a little bit of torque to my understanding. Nothing beats the stock intakes on torque.

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
Primary problem with the Q-Jet is simply ease of tuning and availability of tuning parts - look for the list of available jets, springs and metering rods...the supply isn't great, and the tuning process IMHO is far more difficult than with an Edelbrock or Holly Street Avenger.
I agree they're a great carb, IMHO the difficulties outweigh the benefits. |

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
I agree with vienbar, go with a quadrajet. go with a brand new rebuilt one and stock intake(for the spreadbore instead of square bore, and for the torque). i have never had luck with edelbrocks, but that's me. if it was me, i would go with quadrajet and have someone who knows carbs tune it, then you should never have a problem with it. just my opinion.

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
If you get a Qjet with APT, the main factors are:
getting main jets right getting rods CLOSE picking the right power piston spring (this part is pretty much calculated by vacuum properties). It's not that bad, but yes, changing these things out requires pulling off the top of the carb. Of course, if going much more than stock, it can be modified to make it even better. |

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
trust me on this, all of the common problems and short comings of the Quadrajet can be pointed out by anyone. the fact of the matter is, a Q-Jet, if tuned - jetted - metered - etc properly, there's nothing like it or that can even compare to it. The beauty behind SMI Carburetors is that you enter in your trucks exact specs, and they send you a Q-Jet tailored to your application. From cylinder heads, to cam shaft lift duration and separation, tire size, exhaust manifolds, you name it, they will take it all into account and send you a finished product. These carbs run about $325, but you won't have to touch it for at least 8-10 years. You get it in the mail, bolt it on, and your car will run like a dream. It will only use the cfm that your application calls for. The Edels and holleys are great basic carbs. They perform, but they will yield fuel efficiency and performance. Do your homework, and don't take a short cut on this. edels and holleys are for those who don't want a challenge. it's a quick fix, but the difference is a little more than noticeable.
Wow! I had no idea I was so opinionated. Just keep old vehicles on the road and I'm totally happy. You'll have a great motor no matter what. |

Re: New 350 crate motor delivered today!
I have that exact same motor in mine, it was in it when I got the truck, but it isn't that pretty with all the oil leaking all over it Been thinking about getting a new one since the one I have leaks oil so bad and it doesn't run as good as what a new one would, plus I wouldn't mind keeping the one that I have now and building a monster of a motor out of it for another project. $1400 from the dealership?!? I work at the local GM dealership and they told me it would cost me $1700+. Summit wants $1700 for it now, not including shipping or tax, but Jegs still has it for around $1500 plus $150 shipping and whatever tax would be. When I got the truck the motor had an Edelbrock Performer Intake already on it so I'm not sure which one it is and it had a Holley carb. on it. The Holley started leaking so I took it off and put an Edelbrock Performer 600cfm electric choke carb on it, part #1406 I believe. I just recently put the Edelbrock Performer Fuel Pump on it so everything matches.
