What`s In A Name...plate?

I see alot of members that seem confused over the Chevy model names and fender badges.GM made some changes in model names and added more models as the years went by.I thought I`d clear up/explain what I know to try to help clear things up.

First of all,GM made Custom Campers,not Camper Specials in these years.

67/68:Fender badges were simple,it was a bowtie with the series number 10 through 30.The optional model/trim level was a badge on the door:Custom or CST.If it was a CustomCamper it would have a badge on the fender.No optional engine badge.`68 4wds got a badge under the front side marker light.I`m not sure if all had them or not.

69/70:Fender badges changed to show the model with the base model being a C/10 through 30,even if it was a 4wd.But a 4wd isn`t a C/10 or C/20,drop the "C" and call it a K/10 or K/20.The optional model name left the door and was placed in the fender badge.The names stayed the same,Custom and CST,but the CustomCamper nameplate was changed to the same design (same mounting holes) as the others.The CustomCamper nameplate was an option.So,a CustomCamper could be a a base through higher optioned model and not show it on the fender through`72.
Optional engines recieved a badge,now.It was located under the nameplate.A 4wd got a badge under the front side marker.

71/72:Same badges with three new model names added and C/10 through 30 dropped to become the Custom.Two new models had two names in them...CustomDeluxe and CheyenneSuper.Cheyenne was also added between those two models.This is where it gets interesting(?).Because of the second name of those models,the optional engine badge moved to up under the front side marker and the 4wd badge was dropped.The "Deluxe" and "Super" names took the pace of the engine badge.If the CustomCamper nameplate (fender badge) wasn`t optioned then the truck would have the script under thedoor glass near the back of the door with the model/trim level badge on the fender.

All of guys read these nameplates as Custom 10 Deluxe and Cheyenne 10 Super because the Deluxe and Super are sitting below the custom/10 and Cheyenne/10.But,that`s not the proper name.These model name carried over into the`73 body style when a new badge design made it more clear by showing CustomDeluxe and CheyenneSuper together with the series number following behind.

I just thought I`d lay it out.Anyone have anything to add?

in 69, the custom camper option, (which could be had on it's own, or in addition to the trim packages) badging would 'trump' any other badging. So a 69 CST actually wouldn't even say CST except for on the SPID, and the badge on the glove box. Instead of CST badges on the fender, there would be one in its place staying Custom Camper.
I'm not sure how it was in 70... coulda been like 69, or like 71/72.
In 71 and 72, the Custom Camper badges chainged, it no longer would trump the trim package. Instead, they used the cursive script badges that GMC had been useing, which mount on the door, over the handle, under the windo.

in 71/72 the Custom Camper fender badge became an option in it`s self,when said package was ordered.My`71 CustomCamper/20 had all the cheyenne equipment although it had no Cheyenne markings.The SPID list CustomSportTruck (no CST markings on truck) and CustomCamper nameplate.If the nameplate had not been optioned it would have had the Cheyenne fender badge (nameplate) and the CustomCamper script on the door.(I think most guys could G.A.D...ya think?)

ya guys left out blazers and suburbans. blazers used the CST badges on the door and K5 fender badging thru 72 and subs only went as high as custom deluxe. now i've got a headache, trying to think at 6 in the morning.

throw in the GMC info and it gets real bad.
like the sierra grande... there was a badge shortage, and many that were optioned never got the badges (I have dealer papers here to prove this) Once the dealer got badges in stock, you could come back and have them installed, but ONLY if your SPID had the option package, or the needed seperate options.

And on the subject of Blazers, the fender badge was K/5 Blazer, regardless of whether it was a 2wd or 4wd. My 70 K5 4wd has the 4 Wheel Drive badge directly below the K/5 Blazer badge. Below the front side marker is where I normally see the 8 350 badge but I don't know if this was standard for 69-72.

I'll let someone else who knows the GMC Jimmy's comment on it's badging.

Would be interesting to get pics posted for the above combinations. I've got bunches of pics saved but I'm not sure I would always know what year of truck was being depicted.

Yes,it could be.I`d need more info to say for sure.Longhorns were available in any trim level.

Its actually a GMC...but it has a chevy front clip... thats just how we bought it... Were making it a Chev tho.

That's different from my '69 GMC "Longhorn" (The GMCs weren't actually badged as Longhorns) Mine has "GMC
2500 V-EIGHT"
on the fender and Custom Camper above the door handle. And as mentioned NO Longhorn badge. fwiw

I have never seen a Panel with badging other than the basic C10 C20.From all i have been able to determine there were few built with more than a base package and heavy duty springs and radiator.I have yet to see one with a factory automatic,power anything, or deluxe anything.In fact the SPID in them lists the passenger seat as an option.The smallblock and the 6 cyl. seem to be the only engine options used.The one K series I have seen had the 292 and a 4 speed,all others(no other 4X4's) have had a 3 on the tree.I have seen about 12-15 over the years and most were C10 equipted with 3 on the tree, and either the 250 or a smallblock(probably a 283 originally) most had been used(used up) as service or delivery vehicles.

Thanks Deland.I brought the Panels up for two reasons.First,since guys brought up everything else.I only mentioned Chevy Pickups to keep it simple.Second,because they are a topic in themselves.Definately a bird of a different feather.Although they share the same body style,they went their own way with non-utilitarian options.The same is true for tha car-based Sedan Deliveries,the last ones were all Biscaynes when Impalas were king.And only came in one interior color.I sure like them.
