Gas tank question

Im looking at getting an 85 K10 thats for sale in my area. When I went to look at it with my dad we noticed that the truck only had the pasanger side gas tank, no drivers side tank. I asked my friend about this and he said that his 78 also only has one tank. So my question is are the trucks supose to have two tanks or just the one? Hopefuly some one has the answer and thanks in advance.

Re: Gas tank question

So since the truck is an 85 im guessing it has doors on both sides, becuase I am pretty sure that that late the trucks with only one tank only had them on the drivers side. I could be wrong though. Does it have two fuel doors?

Does it have the tank selector switch in the cab? If not then the bedside may have been replaced at some point in time.

Re: Gas tank question

I suspect that either the bed has been swapped from a dual-tanked truck, or a leaky left tank was deleted at some point to pass inspection... the latter is common in rust-prone East Coast trucks.

Re: Gas tank question

Dual tanks were an option on all trucks. A lot of them came with only one tank, and far more than those with dual tanks.

So are you saying that most of em came with dual tank doors but only one tank?

Re: Gas tank question

i think hes trying to say that someone either swapped the bed or the bed side on a one tank truck with a dual tank bed which is entirely possible. I did the same thing once in desperation. If there is evidence of frame straps for the tank or a dual tank switch on the dash then it was a dual tank truck

No, I am saying the majority of the trucks came with only one tank (and one door). If it has 2 doors and only one tank with no switch, someone swapped the bed.

Re: Gas tank question

I agree my 76 had pass. side tank only, and the 86 4x4 and 84 2wd both have only one tank, one door and it's driver's side.

Re: Gas tank question

If you got both fuel doors already, then you can add the dual tank setup real easy. The wiring harness and switch is a add on deal separate from the main harness so it's easily removed from a donor truck.
