1972 GMC Steering - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi there. Is there anyone out there that knows a little about the steering in a 1972 GMC 1500 pickup? I've been having a hard time lately. Not only is my steering incredibly loose and easily thrown off by ruts in the road, it also is now creating a "knocking" when I drive (on the driver's side). Can anyone help me figure out what the problem could be, or what paticular part I should take a look at?

It's not quite as easy as "can someone tell me" the answer.

Check the components one by one, looking for loose or broken.

OR - Try using our handy dandy search function.

Ya, you will have to get the frontend off the ground then have someone rotate your steering while you check al the components for slop, replace sloppy parts as you go thru it all

You might not want to drive it anymore until you get it checked out. If the clunk noise is coming from the draglink it might be ready to come apart and once that happens you will have no steering at all. Been thru this myself and it's not much fun to be going down the highway at 60 when you loose all steering.

some times it is better to leave it on the ground and have somebody rotate wheel back and forth and look at play in all of the parts shouldnt be much play in them at all

Make sure your steering box is bolted to the frame, cracked frames are common with these

to the boards from Philly, Pa.

yes jaros is right i think i remember that if it gets real bad it can pop when it flexes
you really need to get under there before you drive it any more

Not saying it 'never' happens on our year trucks but the frame cracking thing is a much bigger concern (pretty common) on the 73+ truck frames.

Good thing to check and definitely make sure the steering box bolts are tight but I'd be surprised if the frame was busted.
