x frame?

I got some questions about 62-63 frames. I looked at a truck that is suppost to be a 63 but it has a rear X frame. I didn`t even look at the front cuz the guy said it was a 63 and I know those are coil spring. did 63`s have the rear x frame? One side is cracked in half anyway so can I just cut out the x frame part and just build a crossmember similar to the later years? What is the X frame for?

60 -62 had the frame with the x and torsion bar front suspension. So far as cutting it out I'm not sure. When I had my 62 I really didn't pay to must attention to it. I 'm guessing that it was a stronger frame thats why they did that?

The x-frame was added for strength needed for the torsion bar front suspension. My 62 has been converted to coil springs using a 73-87 front subframe. The x-frame was cut out, nothing was affected...jc

Thanks. This is what I thought. I will be getting a 73-up crossmember to eliminate the torsion bars. One side of the x frame is cracked anyway. Did you make a new crossmember to go across the frame rails like the later ones or just cut it out and leave it? The frame is boxed back there. Sounds like the "63" is actually a 62. I found a 73 up crossmember suspension brakes and steering box for $200. Is that the going rate? Thanks.

63 and up have ladder frames that are allot narrower. Definitely sounds like you found a 62. 200 bucks don't sound bad but i have no knowlege on the swap so i couldn't tell you 100 percent. just my .02

We fabbed up a pretty beefy crossmember for the tranny... the frame is boxed and seems pretty strong... $200 sounds like a decent price for those parts...

I was conserned about the rear frame. The later ones have a crossmember right about the axle. If I cut out the x frame there won`t be anything there. I didn`t think the trans crossmember was attached since it looks like the x frame just rivets to the front trailing arm crossmember. I`m hopeing to pick the truck up this weekend so I`ll take a better look at what`s there.

That crossmember was left on. Only the front half off the 'X' was removed...

Thanks Joe. The guy backed out of the deal anyway so this thread is pointless now. Man there are alot of shadey people out there. Thanks for the info guys. My project truck search continues.

The whole frame has been altered. Cut out the X Part of the Frame was cut out. I cut holes in the sides of the frame to lighten and strenghten frame as well.

Can you explain how cutting holes in the frame makes it stronger?

Sorry, I worded it wrong. I ment that It lightens the frame while leaving the strenght the same. Boxed and Relieved I think is the Term used. Should of Broke it down.

Well looks like my deal is back on. He emailed me and said a guy was interested in both trucks but he ended up only taking the 66 so he called today and asked if I was still interested. If it works out this time, I should have a 62 swb big window in my garage by tomorrow evening.
