HO72 drum removal

I have a 72 c30 wrecker dually with the HO72 rear.

I`m getting information and parts together to do the breaks this spring before I start towing my race car with it. leaking wheel cyl.

What`s the proper way for removing/installing the drum. Just ran a search and not much info on this. I can figure it out I just don`t want my tires/drum/ axle assm passing me at hyw speeds.

Doing a search the socket I need is the KDT2770 correct?

From reading, the shoes, wheel cyl ect..I can get from say napa or the like but prob special order.

The drums are a "good luck finding" item, but My truck only has 20K on it so I`m guessing the drums should be find.....Yes 20k, the original owners, a auto body shop never really used it, and the drivetrain, motor and such lead me to believe it`s true.

Thanks,Mark

Re: HO72 drum removal

You better replace everything in there that you can. Cylinders, springs, adjusters, mounting kits.
My SRW HO72 ended up costing me way more than drums have the right to. They stopped making everything for mine a long time ago.
Lets put it this way... $500, I still have old front shoes, 1 old brake cylinder, 2 old adjusters... and all 4 drums.

Re: HO72 drum removal

Ok so the tool I need is the KDT 2770 or any brand 4 Wheel Drive 1/2" Square Drive Spindle Nut Wrench?

Can anyone lead me to the correct way to remove/ install these drums for the dually rear.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: HO72 drum removal

What is the diff'ce between an HO72 drum and any other drum?

Every drum I've ever removed was as simple as "take off the wheel, smack the living bejeezus out of the drum between each of the lugs with a BFH to free it up, when it starts moving (breaks free), pull it off..." Once the actual drum is off, you can remove all of the internals. You gotta pull the axles in order to swap out the backing plate, though.

Re: HO72 drum removal

If the HO 72 is like the HO52 then you must pull axel, then hub. Drum is attached from the rear side of the hub by the lug studs.

shifty, most full floating hubs are like this. The 1/2 ton semi floating style is normally a smack and pull, and that continues on to modern vehicles too.

Re: HO72 drum removal

there are some full floaters that have slip on drums... but they are not the norm.
