Re: gas tanks

What are your pros and cons concerning the two?

Metal = rust sure but hey, it lasted almost 35 years - right?

Poly = ? What's your concern with the plastic?

Re: gas tanks

Just installed Poly on my 72. Works great, had to get a longer hose from filler neck.

Re: gas tanks

Does anybody know if ethenol will effect the poly tanks at all? Here in Oregon starting in April our gas will have 15% ethenol in it and I know my dad had to change out all the fuel lines in his boat because of this.

Re: gas tanks

My only question would be how the poly tanks hold up in our trucks in super cold weather. I know the mounting method works for steel, and I dont know if its a big deal for poly.

My original is still in my K-5, however it has been repaired a few times. For me it would boil down to fixability, price and warranty. Steel I can fix, poly I cannot. So "fixability" is a factor for me.

Hey Adam, since I haven't needed a new tank, I stayed out of the way of the more knowledgable folks here, but no one mentioned an older thread that I don't have a link for. I do remember pieces of it concerning installation of an aftermarket steel tank. It seems the filler flange isn't correct, but a radiator shop can remove the new one and solder on the factory one from your old tank on at a reasonable price. I would recommend Dakota Radiator as a board member, Bryan (67 cst swb), works there if you decide to go steel and the flange needs to be swapped.

Poly tanks should work just fine with any amount of ethanol. Dirt track Late Model stock cars and Sprint cars run 100% Methanol in poly tanks with no problems as far as a chemical reaction to the plastic. Methanol is a lot "stronger" than ethanol.

Re: gas tanks

i am getting ready to pull my poly tank off my 72 blazer, let me know if it will work for your truck. also for the other response, ethynol will only effect your fuel lines and maybe carb, but dont worry about your poly gas tank it will be fine

Re: gas tanks

I know I have read from a post or two in the main section that some people have had issues with the plastic tanks sagging. Those posts were probably 3-4 years old and I don't recall seeing anything on that issue recently.

Here is the thread concerning the steel tank fitment issues.

Re: gas tanks

There is a thread on an aftermarket steel tank where the filler neck is not correct. The poly I installed was the same way.

Re: gas tanks

Yeah I just started putting in my repop tank and the neck is in the worng place. But I guess when life gives you lemons ... From all the treads I could find you have to make the same mods the truck guys are to make having to make. To get around the rear bed cross member once I get mine fixed I'll shot some pics. -J
