To Louver or not to Louver that is .......

My 68 shorty is almost all original. The tail gate is pretty banged up. The letter where all bashed in. No way did I have the skill to straighten it. Since it was the easiest panel to remove I started there. I figured no real risk since I would most likly buy a repro anyway. So I cut out the letters and welded in plate with my HF flux core weld. Wow did I warp everything. It required about .15 of fiberglass and several hours with a body file to level it. I have since got a nice Lincoln Mig and some training.

Well I recently got the news I am going to be a daddy again. I am going to have one in collage and one in diapers. Needless to say my budget just went from what I want to spend to just a little above zero.

The way I see it I have 3 options, One finsh up a couple of low spots and move one to other things. Second Cut out all the glass and weld in new metal Third, I pick this out of the scrap today(see pic 3) Its 16 gage I was thinking louvers. I am going to drop the truck and some kind of rims and most likly change the color to red and a cowl hood. Are louvers hacky now? Seems like doing two rows across the letter area would be easy?

I know no one can tell me what I like but I am really on the fence, hopfully a discussion will help me decide.

I think it looks really 80's. But if really 80's is your style, I say go for it.

I kinda think it depends on the car. On these trucks, yes they look tacky. But a deuce coupe?? Thats another story!!

IMO, A custom rod with a chopped top, Sure section It, Chop it, Louver it. But these trucks IMO dont need it.

Re: To Louver or not to Louver that is .......

For now I will just smooth out what I have. I hope to find a tailgate down the road that has the correct Text in it. Once I have that I can play with my exsiting one.

Thanks for the opinions

I personally like them to a degree. I wouldn't do my whole hood but I did do two rows on it. I did it back in the early 90's though.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: To Louver or not to Louver that is .......

Louvered hoods is one thing. It serves a purpose or looks like it does.Louvering the rest of the body is questionable. On a Roadster it`s just a hotrod gone wild.On full-bodied late-models...nah!Definately never w/o hood done first.

You have to cut the X-brace out, punch the louvers, then weld the X-brace back in. Piece of cake...

Personally, I'd pass on the louvers.

Re: To Louver or not to Louver that is .......

id louver the tailgate just for the experience cause then if it looks good and u like it u can leave it and when someone asks sewhere down the line where u got that custom tail gate u can proudly state that u made it yourself where as stock looks amazing on these trucks but u cant say u made ur repro tailgate so for me id see how it looks just so i can have the experience and know that i made it not a factory
