Can you replace the grommet without pulling the tank out? Stupid question, maybe, but I've never done it before and don't want to cut the old one out before I realize what's involved.

Yes, but you have to be very careful. Cut it out from the backside with a razor knife. Try warming the new gromet up under a spotlight or something to make it softer. I've replaced them without removing them, so i know it's possible

Interesting...That happens to be about exactly where I am at..even looks like your truck was the same yellow as mine. Let me know how it works for you, but since I have the seat out, I will probably pull the tank anyhow.

Is this straightforward when the tank is out? Or is there a trick to doing it then too?

Getting ready to upgrade fuel system, and might as well do a new gromet while swapping tanks.

Cut it out and smear dish liquid to the new one and slide it on. Easy! No need to pull the tank for a 2 minute job.

yep, when the tanks out its pretty easy, just slide the filler neck up through the hole.

I looked at it and I chickened out - The grommet is rock hard and hard to get to, and I have to take my seat out again anyways, so I'll wait.

Have no fear. Cut that old turd outa there and replace it with a new one. Use Gibbs www.gibbsbrandlubricant.com to lube the rubber and it will jump in that hole!!!

Been there done that!!!!!

Well, now you got me thinking - maybe I'l try tomorrow. If I can't get it I can always pull the tank, I have to pull the seat anyways. I'll let you know how it turns out.
