In-Line Frame Mount Transmission Cooler - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm interested in installing an In-Line Frame Mount Transmission Cooler.. Is anyone using one? Is it working for you. What is the difference between the longer and shorter tranny coolers. Also, some coolers have an inlet/outlet on the same side and some have them on opposite sides. Any feedback? Thanks.

You mean like this?

I don't have a tranny temp gauge, but I'm sure it's doing its job. This is mounted on the front crossmember. It's the shorter one with the lines going in on the same side.

I run one on my Nova.... You can see it under the front bumper in this pic... It works well and trust me the tranny takes some abuse!

they're good coolers/ the ones with both fittings on the same end are double pass meaning the fluid goes thro the length of the cooler twice as the ones with fittings on each end the fluid goes thru once

Thats how mine is set up... I hard lined mine..

Here's mine (24") mounted on the frame rail on passenger side. I used "push-on" style fittings to plumb it. Hasn't seen alot of road time yet, so I don't know how well it works.

Another nice thing about having inlet/outlet on same side is it's easier to plumb.

Also.....I don't think one is better than the other in regards to cooling (dbl pass vs. single). When I looked inside mine it looked like one big chamber and even if there was a divider down the middle to get "dbl pass" you're still only using half the cooler on each pass.......just can't see it making much of a difference. It's all about surface area of the cooling fins.

I would just get the longest one that will fit your application.

Mine's not run is series with my radiator, but I do have a derale pan that has cooling tubes in it.

When I start driving it more, I may route through radiator if I need (I have a tranny temp gauge hooked up)

I've used several over the years and have found that the extra price for the two pass filters is a little deceiving. Most filters I have been able to look in to had a single chamber inside. Doesn't seem like there is any, or if any at all, value there for the extra money spent. If I'm concerned about oil temp I would normally use two single line, cheaper units, and hook them up on the same run. I put a temp gauge on the out side of the second one to determine operational temp.
If you are really curious as to the effectiveness of the unit, use a laser temp gauge and check the line going into the first unit, and then about a foot or so behind the second one. If there is no Delta, you wasted your money and time

I wonder if they would get enough airflow mounted inside of a side frame rail to do any good. Like on the one pic. I can see the others that are up front doing just fine.

I have never used one of these frame rail mounted coolers but I would be afraid of puncturing it or damaging it while driving and maybe losing all my trans fluid. However, I plan to take my truck out to the desert. Also, you need good airflow around the cooler to take away the heat. Also, I believe the fluid should go through the radiator first and then through the added on cooler for even more cooling of the fluid.

i was going to run the summit rectangular one in the same location that the others have (under the front bumper), but i got talked out of it by a friend of mine who thought that the location would get alot of road debris abuse. i was also looking into getting the inline frame one but did not for the same reason. i am currently running mine to the radiator cooler on the side. it is a 383 motor & a 700r4 tranny. what is the opinions of you guys that are running these types of coolers in relation to road debris & such????
