OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

I've never had this happen before BUT I cannot get the 205 knob off my shifter in the truck. I've used the rubber mit you use in the kitchen to take off lids off jars, I used a strap wrench, I PB Blastered it still it won't budge. I've got a blister from trying to turn it so many time with my hand. I don't want to tear it up because its in good shape. ANY IDEAS??? Thanks Randy

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

You use a rubber mit to loosen jar lids!!!

You might try tapping it around the edges with a rubber mallet..other than that some cocentrated heat just below the threads on the shaft of the shifter. Good luck, I've never had one that tight before.

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

What about using a blow dryer or heat gun to heat the knob. It might take a while to get it heated all the way through. Once it's heated good spray PB Blaster on the threaded part and let it cool. While it's still hot/warm, take a brass hammer or something that will not damage the metal and tap on the metal shift handle. Just my .02. Good luck!

I agree, Try tightening it, A seal does develope and it sounds wierd, but tightening it just a touch breaks that seal and it should then turn off.

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

There should be a lock nut on the bottom side of the knob that you have to turn clockwise first before trying to loosen the knob. If you have done this, then hot air gun would be your next option. WES

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

Randy,
I know you already have the jam nut loose, I am guessing that if it won't budge with the strap wrench, its because someone has used lock tight on it. If that is the case (and they used red) you won't get it loose unless its heated no matter how much or what kind of penetrating oil you squirt on it. . You could do 1 of 2 things, make a heat shield from a piece of tin to protect the knob with a 1/2 slot cut in it and use your torch to carefully warm the shifter just below the knob. Heat rises, that may work.
Option 2, since you want to remove the knob to install the carpet, remove the shift handle from underneath, that will make the carpet install pretty easy and you wont damage that nice knob.
Just a couple ideas

Jeff

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

Some of you guys are to funny!!! I've tried tightening it, I've had the lock nut loose from the start, I've tried all my rubber stuff. I tried PBBLASTER, I guess I'll have to try heat. I'm changing it to a chrome shifter, and I have the black shifter sold without the knob. Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll work on it Sunday hopefully. Randy

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

It's bizarre how the littlest things can trip you up when you're doing stuff to your truck. They are potentially the most frustrating at times. But that's part of the reason we work on them, I guess, for the satisfaction of getting past those things succesfully.

Randy, when you're done forcing it tightening it, gripping it greasing it and burning it..... for a change I don't want to buy it!

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

I bought a 465/205 combination several weeks ago from a fellow who had parted a 71 K20. He said he got tired of the shifter knobs "squirming around" all the time so a year or two before he stopped running the truck he epoxied the threads and solved the problem. Could be the PO of your transfer case did the same.

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

If it's not going to come off without boogering it up... the knob is valuable... the shifter isn't... I'd cut the shifter off as close to the knob as possible. Weld a nut to the end of the stub, let it cool just a bit, then hit it with a 3/8" impact & it should spin out. If you catch it at just the right time when the heat has soaked into the threads, it will help break the rust &/ or locktite loose.

Question- I have an '80 chrome 205 shifter I want to put my '72 knob on. I'm thinking the threaded stub is bigger on the chrome shifter?

Re: OK ole WISE ONES, QUESTION!!!

Someone probably used loctite on it. The "high strength" stuff require a torch or heat to remove. Always use the "medium strength" on something you might want to take apart.
