How's this for an idea for a 72 GMC - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My dad currently owns my grandpa's 72 GMC C25, bought new by him in 1972. My grandpa's shop burned down a year and a half ago, and the truck was in a neighboring shed and the bed got badly burned and the tire melted enough to go flat. The damage is mostly on the driver's side, but there were hay bales in the bed that started on fire and ruined the rubber mat and the wood underneath. The truck is in the same spot a year and a half later, and it does run, the motor and drive train are intact, the bed is shot. My dad just built a new shop at our farm two miles away, complete with a floor mounted 10,000 lb vehicle lift. I'm thinking about restoring this truck mostly back to stock, but i want to turn it into a Drag push truck, like the kind a drag racer would've bought in the 70's to pull his car to the track, and then push start his car at the line. It is currently a 350, TH400 (I think), and a Dana 60, and i'm thinking about adding a big block (396-454) and just making the rest stock and adding lettering like a drag team would've had on their truck, mabye patina(ed), to look like it is from the 70's. What do you guys think? Any comments are appreciated, they will only make it better, if i ever get on it. I'm just trying to get feedback on what other people think.

Sounds like it would be a great project. There was a couple of pictures on here a while back of trucks with push bumpers on them. I think one of the members' dad ran a garage and used them.

it has a ginormous grill guard on it my grandpa put on it for farm stuff, so i might modify it or just leave it alone

That's a great idea. You see a lot of patina shop trucks at shows, but the push truck idea is pretty unique. Also a good way to keep it a 3/4 ton.

Seeing it was in the family since new, I would think keeping the original motor & transmission would make the truck worth more.

I agree.Since it's been in the family all its life, I would keep it as original as possible, and giving it the "drag push car" look is something you don't see every day.I say " go for it!".

Original motor is long gone. My dad and grandpa blew it up 16 yrs ago, the summer b4 i was born, and replaced it with a motor from a neighbor's totaled 69 3/4 ton Chevy, so it doesn't rle matter, the original motor was sold as soon as it was pulled out. the truck the motor came out of is still in my grandpa's grove with all the parts attached except motor and trans

Here is a couple pics of my burb. I was told the PO used it to push his race car. You can't tell it by looking at it but it runs like a scalded ape. It burns rubber when it hits 2nd gear. It is a factory bb, but it runs too good to be a 402, so I think it is a 454.

Yeah, my biggest problem is finding a new bed and fixing the major rust but still keeping the patina on it. I hope to find a decent 427 to put in it. Of course time and money are in the way now, so it may be a while b4 i get to it

The truck should already have disc brakes if it is a 72.

yeah, my dad thought it had discs, but we weren't sure, but it isn't that hard to check. He also said the rims were two piece, with a snap ring. Did GM do that? It doesn't sound right, but i've never looked, either.

Yes, GM had split rims on the older trucks. I would recommend getting a one piece wheel.

yeah, i will try, but i want to keep the original look of the steel wheels, if i can. I don't rle want new aluminum rims or anything. I want to keep the look as clean and original and patina(ed) as possible. Do you know of any junkyards that keep beds for these trucks? i kno there is one by st. cloud, but i don't know anything or anywhere else.

yes gm did have 2 peice rims there not streetlegal rims im mn cause in order to get my 68 gmc street legal the county had me get new rims but they were kind enough to provide me with some cheapo replacements even

yeah, we've got hubcaps and we hardly ever drove it more than into town 5 miles or from farm to farm 3 miles, so it doesn't matter, and i am going to change them sometime once i get going on it, so i don't have much to worry about, but i do have to get a new rear tire on it to at least get it the three miles to my place
