JEEP ELECTRIC FAN info.....

well i just came off a 800 mile road trip and tested my ( jeep ) electric fan out. spec,s. on my truck first.
250 I-6 engine all stock except .040 over bore
3 speed manuel trans
3.73 rear end ratio
28" tall rear tires
new 3 core radiator
160 degree thermostat

speed i cruised at 62-65 mph
1/2 OF ALL MILES WAS HAULING 1400-1500 LBS

fuel milage went up from 11.25 to 13.2 average mpg
i pulled several mountains in tn.,ky., & va. temp went to 190 degrees then i turnned fan on manuelly, i believe it WILL NOT cool the engine if outside air temp is in 80,s and up temps. i also think the stock GM fan schroud is not allowing air to pass thru when at cruzing speed freely. i believe i,am going to install a double fan setup with no schroud also i,am going to a 4 core rad.
this is just my spreience. this will definatly NOT cool a hopped up sbc and definatly not a big block engine so dont waste your time or money try,in it. IMO

Re: JEEP ELECTRIC FAN info.....

Hey Bob. This report is exactly what we all need to see. Real world usage, not just bolt on and look good at the show. I have been holding off on purchasing one for mine to see how it worked out for others such as yourself. I have a 9 to 1 350/T350 and 4.10 gear with 4 row radiator. Not any where near ready for the road yet but with that gear that single fan just might not cut it even before turning on the ac. Thanks.

Re: JEEP ELECTRIC FAN info.....

Interesting report, thanks. So do you think it moves more or less air than the stock fan on a water pump? just curious because it sounds as though it is comparable to what the stock fan on the water pump might do. When it went up to 190 was that with or without the tow load?

Re: JEEP ELECTRIC FAN info.....

I don't mean to contradict anyone, but, no bs....my 383, turbo 350, 373 rear, 2 row rad and my jeep fan keeps the temp at between 180 & 200 degrees going down the road. So far, no problems. I also have 180 degree fan sensor with a 165 degree t-stat. I can set at idle and the temp goes to around 205 before the sensor turns on the fan. Cools down to around 170 to 180 and the fan shuts off, then cycles again. So far, I haven't had to use the manual switch.

This is something to keep in mine if you get a used Jeep fan like I did. I tested mine before installing it, and it seemed to run slow. I took the motor off the fan blades and took an air hose to it. I never seen so much dirt and dust come out of a fan motor like that. I connected the motor to the battery to run as I was using the air pressure. As the dirt and dust was clearing up, the motor's RPM got higher & higher.

At idle, with the fan installed & running in the shroud, it will hold a small shop towel against the front half of the radiator without dropping off. To me, that is pulling some air.

Another thing to remember, make sure you installed the fan to pull air, not push air.

Re: JEEP ELECTRIC FAN info.....

im with 70gmcer, i used mine all last summer and never had a problem with over heating. when with my stock mechanical fan i would start over heating when i beat on the truck or in traffic. but i never hauled anything with it. by your specs you had a 1200-1500lbs payload. just something to think about..... mechanical fans are used on big trucks and trucks that hauls for a reason.... look at 3/4 and 1 ton pickups they will have a mechanical clutch fan. electric fans dont seem to provide enough cooling for pulling. im the one who wrote up the artical about the jeep fan install, and i am a jeep tech and jeeps that had factory trailer hitches had both a mechanical fan and that electric fan.

Re: JEEP ELECTRIC FAN info.....

i know with a direct drive 5 blade stock fan temps never went above 185 degrees, never.... i feel for sure it wont cool enough for a mild sbc especially on a hot day and definatly not with A/C.
I,am gonna do the double fan route with no schroud. i can use the jeep fan on other projects so no big deal there. in cooler climates the jeep fan will most likely be enough for all 6 cyls & sbc,s. not bbc engines IMO

Re: JEEP ELECTRIC FAN info.....

ALSO I NEVER LET MY ENGINES REACH 200 DEGREES I FEEL THATS WAY TO HOT. 185 is my desired max temp, loaded and workin hard...... especially with a 6 cyl. engine. if outlet temp is 185 deg. the #6 cylinder is over 200 deg.

Re: JEEP ELECTRIC FAN info.....

For me 200 is not too warm, 220 on the other hand is. That said I would like it to stay under 200 for the most part. Heck they put 195 thermostats in a lot of cars now a days. My 99 tahoe with a 350 runs right around 200 all the time.
Seems like we have conflicting reports. Hopefully this summer I'll know if it works for me. The few time I have had the fan running though it seems to pull as much if not more air than a stock fan.
