What Gauge Steel

Anyone have opnions on what gauge steel to use when making patch panels?

I believe the last time I bought some it was 16 guage to try my hand at patching a bad area on my tailgate. I've heard of some using thinner guage.

You might ask the Paint and Body forum also. I've gotten some good help from that forum on body and paint questions.

mic the area you're going to repair and get as close as you can (18ga.). Using thicker metal will just cause problems welding (IMO)
