Junk yard trans/transfer case removal
Well, today we did some rather amazing trans removal work considering it was about 28 degrees, 35 mph wind gusts and were not allowed a jack! Done a lot of junk yard u-pull it scavenging but nothing ever this big and heavy. Removed a TH400/NP208 combo, intact , from a diesel blazer. Took all of 3 hours, no bleeding, no accidents. Brought lots of cut up 2x4s, 2x6s, and 4x4s for blocks. Remembered to bring SAE AND Metric tools and socket extensions(this was an 85) , fogot the cheater pipe but found one in the yard (for turning the crank to remove all the flywheel/converter bolts). Brought a wheelbarrel for the tools, a handtruck to carry the trans/transfer combo out. After we were all done the trans combo, a door panel, torque converter, front/back driveshafts ran us a little under $200.00. Plus the trans has already been rebuilt by Jasper according to the tag. Putting it back in the Blazer in the garage, on a nice concrete floor, with a drop light instead of a flashlight, and JACKS, should be less of a challenge.

Re: Junk yard trans/transfer case removal
Sounds like fun! Would they of let you take in a come-a-long & a sawzall? You could have cut a big hole in the trans hump, a little hole in the roof...

Re: Junk yard trans/transfer case removal
I don't understand why they didn't let you take a jack in to pull that trans out. Seems to me they made it a lot harder on you than it needed to be even though you sure got it cheap enough! It'll go in your Blazer a whole lot easier in your garage. Good thing that you don't have to put it back in the way that it came out! ...Joe

It just so happens it was Harry's in West Hazleton. I had been there last Saturday, what a muddy slop mess. The trans was in a ex Military blazer, identical to the one I'm fixing. Wanted it still there when I went back. Plus, I knew the ground would be frozen yesterday (plywood on frozen ground beats plywood on mud anyday) which made it a bit easier. They don't allow jacks for insurance reasons, so we used the Fred Flintstone method of LOTS of wood blocks and pry bars. Worked out just fine. BTW the blazer still has the front axle (broken) and the diesel engine but no starter, alts, front bumper, grill is shot, good tailgate, fair fenders, good hood. We did quite well for two old guys, 50 & 76. Gerry
