General Tune Up Questions Please

Well summer has all but arrived and im still not running, to make this short i have bought some tune up parts, Plugs wires, Ignition Module, Cap Rotor Button, etc but a young punk like me has little experience in installing these parts (dont get me wrong im not lost when it comes to it) but their is stuff im not sure about and my father seems to have more important things to do then help me so i have decided i will just eliminate depending on someone else... so could someone please make a detailed list of things i should do, one area im rather confused on is installing the wires, i know the firing order, 18436572 but im unsure on how to translate that into installing them, are all the odd number cylinders one side?? and where is number one on the cap? info like that would be great

Re: General Tune Up Questions Please

Remove the #1 spark plug which is in the front on the drivers side. Place your thumb or finger over the hole and have someone bump the starter over. When it blows your finger off the hole, stop. Then turn the engine over by hand until you align the 0 or TDC with the line on the dampner. You should only have to turn the engine a few degrees one way or the other to reach it. Once you have it at 0 degrees (TDC) top dead center, remove the distributor cap to see where the rotor is pointing when the cap is on and in place. The rotor should be real close to one of the plug wire holes in the front of the cap. Now, this is where the #1 plug wire goes. Work your way in a clockwise fashion following the firing order around the cap. The drivers side of the motor are #'s 1-3-5-7 and the passenger side are 2-4-6-8 running from front to rear.

Re: General Tune Up Questions Please

I would suggest only changing one at a time if they are not all off already.

I also thought there was a general maint. sticky somewhere. I will look for it and post a link if I find it.

Re: General Tune Up Questions Please

IF the truck runs and has its wires on it now, replace them, then pull the cap, replace the rotor, and put the new cap on and put the wires on one at a time from the old cap, that is a trick my dad taught me. Pertronix, i think, makes a HEI tune up kit for the big cap dizzys. If you have a small cap some other companies make them, MSD, Accel, but i like MSD the best, bit that's just my opinion. Don't forget to replace (or clean and re-oil, if you have K&N or like) the air filter and check the fuel filter. Be sure to gap EVERY spark plug b4 installation.

Don't forget dielectric grease on both ends of the wires.

Re: General Tune Up Questions Please

And anti seize on the spark plug threads, and don't over tighten, just tighten with fingers until snug and use a wrench about a half turn more, if that, don't crank on it, my dad once over tightened one and it broke off in the head, he had to remove the whole thing, PITA.

Re: General Tune Up Questions Please

BLAH, no one at ourr schol is that retarded, we live where it snows half the year, so no one does that, plus nobody has the time, money, or knowledge, or their parents pay for everything, and they don't rle care as long as it runs and drives. They don't even know what the warning lights mean, they drive it until it doesn't run, a friend of mine drove on a flat until the tire shredded itself, about 3 miles. He was just like, "oh, that's what felt weird, my dad will fix it." They piss me off b/c they don't care about the machines that changed the world and run our lives. They just expect it do go where it needs to go and get pissed when it doesn't work the way they want it to, and they don't care about them. Sorry i will get of my , just my rant for the day.

Re: General Tune Up Questions Please

make sure to put the plug wires back in there looms so that they dont touch upagainst any manifolds or moving parts, wouldnt want you to ruin a new set of wires. the dist. cap only goes on one way if i remember correctly, there is a small nodule in the cap that lines up with a groove in the dist. body, you'll see as you play with it. i would do as sjarrett says if you are new to this, just one at a time, memorize 18436572, you'll need it down the road. the rotor is easy too, just un-screw it and screw the new one on. good luck
