67 won't start....

My 67 K10 With a 305 and a SM465 was running decently yesterday, then i ran it out of gas. Filled it up, it started, sputtered and back fired, and then the starter wouldn't turn. I left it for a while, checked the plugs, which are less than a year old and completely black. I came back later, it turned over and did the same thing and then wouldn't start. Now the starter will not turn, and i think it is the solenoid b/c it doesn't click when i turn the key. Is it the solenoid or could it be bad battery cables? I'm going to replace them tomorrow b/c they are old and i want to rule them out. Also, my dad says it might be out of time, and we have a light, but there are no marks on the balancer, and that would explain the badly fouled plugs. I know the truck has to turn over first, but i just wanted to know for later. Also, with the solenoid, does it have to come out from the bottom? I would probably replace the whole starter because of Murphy's law, and it LOVES me.

Ed

Re: 67 won't start....

The best way to replace the solenoid is to remove the starter.

The dark plugs sounds like it has been running rich, maybe a carb problem.

It does sound like it jumped time.

Changing the the cables and making sure all connections are good is a real good idea.

Good luck.

Re: 67 won't start....

you jumped timing, and your floats are stuck id bet, loosen your distributor and turn it clockwise about a 1/5th turn at a time and nock on the carb to try to free the float, you may need to take it apart and clean it.

Re: 67 won't start....

If it ran out of gas after running ok, I wouldn't think anything like it jumping time would be the problem. Of course, backfiring isn't a great sign... Also, spark plugs shouldn't be an issue. Maybe it sucked up some garbage and clogged the fuel filter after being empty.

Right now the trouble is it doesn't want to turn...

Clean up the cable ends, check and fix grounds. The engine should be grounded via a large cable like the + cable going to the starter. Then the engine should be grounded to the body, and the body to the frame. The engine to body and body to frame grounds don't need to be so large because they don't run the starter.

You can use jumper cables to help check for a bad ground for example, by using one cable and connecting one end to the - battery terminal, and the other to the engine.

Re: 67 won't start....

I'm going to replace the cables and the battery is rle old so i'm going to replace that, because it has gone dead too many times, always takes a charge when i put a battery charger to it.

Re: 67 won't start....

do this....

1. Make sure that you have the RIGHT battery for your truck... i had a problem with this... the battery wasnt the right size and it kept going dead after a few weeks... bought the right size and 6 months later still no problem

2... check the starter... 1st try hitting it with a hammer if it is not turning... 2nd unbolt it and drop it...make sure it is spinning freely and all the teeth are good... while you are doing this check the solinoid too... go have it tested at o'reallys or autozone.... they can tell you if it is bad... try that first and then see it it starts...

oh and b4 i forget change the fuel filter!!! that will kill you... i cant tell you how many times the fuel filter has been my problem

Re: 67 won't start....

Ok, I went to NAPA and got battery cables, and a new battery. Put the cables on, made sure the positive was tight on the starter, made sure the neg. was grounded to clean metal, and the solenoid clicked for three key turns, and now it is dead again. Should i have it taken to Advance Auto or NAPA and checked? It won't even click which tells me its the solenoid, but if it is bad i will get a new starter, just for reliability. Where is the fuel filter on these trucks? On the frame under the cab?

Re: 67 won't start....

They where usually inline ones in between the fuel pump and carb. There may be a factory one im not aware of tho.

Re: 67 won't start....

Mine just has a hard line from pump to carb, but it is not the original motor, either.

If you're running a Q-jet, the filter is in the carburetor at the fuel inlet.
It's a small paper filter, prone to plugging easily; especially if you run out of gas and then suck all the crap out of the tank.
Be very careful when replacing this filter. If you don't get everything lined up just right, you can strip the threads in the carburetor body.
There are repair kits available (or used to be) to fix it, but it's just another PITA.

On my trucks, I've cut the steel line between between the fuel pump and the carburetor and installed a STEEL bodied inline filter. This stops a lot of junk from getting to the carburetor filter.

That's my .02.

I was reading this and thought I might have an idea. Then I re-read and have to say the battery or connections to it are bad. Every single fault to keep you from running can be caused by a bad battery or connection. From there I would question the starter, then the ignition (fouled plugs) all caused by a bad battery. You may have two problems.

I'm slightly confused, i just replaced the battery and cables, are you saying this was all caused by a bad battery? Or are you saying these are separate problems?

take a marker and mark on your distributor where it goes through your intake, so you can move it back when you get done. Then unbolt the distributor hold down bolt, then turn the distributor till you can reach the lockdown.

are you sure you cant get the cap off? I have a HEI and it's not that big of a deal to get the cap off even behind the blower you just have to use a short stubby screw driver

Re: 67 won't start....

The beast runs! Why is it that i bashed on the starter with a ball peen hammer and it suddenly works? is it the windings or just the force puts something back into alignment?
When i drove it around the yard, when i gunned it it sputtered and backfired and didn't want to go, is that a clogged filter? Should i install a clear filter in the rubber line b4 the pump, that would be easier than cutting and flaring the hard line to the carb.
