Help Me Choose on Heater Box - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Should i remove the heater box and shave the firewall or should i leave the box and still have heat. Truck is not going to be a daily driver but i wold like to drive it in early spring and early fall, but the shaved firewall looks so good! the cab is completely stripped down and off the truck so now would be a great time. I may sell this truck in the next year or so though so keep that in mind as far as re-sale

shave it and put in a Vintage Air setup w/ heat and A/c

You could just cover the firewall holes with a plate of aluminum or stainless etc for a cool look and there will then be the option of returning back to stock. This way if the next guy wants the air or heat he can if its a plate welded in you run the chance of loosing the sale.

Don't remove the heat, you'll regret it on a rainy evening. Look into the street rod market (maybe that jegs link) and get some small unit that'll be hidden behind the dash. I'm sure speedway motors has a few to choose from.

I say shave it if you use the aftermarket heater. Has anyone done this yet?

I say...Shave it and go with the add-on heater. I did it, but with Heat & Air, and don't regret it one bit. It makes the engine compartment sooo much neater.

Not to mention that when you put the truck back together you won't have to mess with the 500pcs of the original set-up. Just install the unit, mount a knob or two, hook the hoses to it, and power it up.

I am starting to think about this also, can you use the existing controls? Do you have any pics? Thanks

I used a Heat & A/C kit from a local manufacturer. Not a heat only kit. If using the flex-o-lite kit linked above, I bet you'd have to use their controls. It's possible that someone makes a unit that would utilize factory controls, but I have no idea whom it might be. Maybe Vintage, Hot Rod, or someone like that.

I went all aftermarket with my truck, simplifying a lot of stuff along the way. But also eliminating the factory controls for just about everything.

I do have pics of my set-up, but I seriously doubt they'd help your situation. But if ya want'em, I'd be happy to send'em to ya.

I like em shaved

I don't have my A/C or heat yet and I don't plan to drive it too much in the rain, but the one time I did, it wasn't fun wiping the windsheild with my hand to see.

it does look good shaved but im a function over formality type so i say keep it and plus i actually like seeing it sit there but its all up to you

If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape. If a hammer doesn't fix it, you have an electrical problem!
