454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
Any Input? I just bought a 1972 C-10 Cheyenne short bed with a 454bb TH400 it originaly had a inline 6 shifter on the tree and I was looking at the Motor it is sitting on the on V6 motor mounts wow I didn't know this could be done. Truck runs great but I tore it apart for paint But I want to change out the motor mounts . I was looking at the Driver side valve cover and it is hitting the fire wall Will this be corrected when I change out the motor mounts or do I have to pound my firewall in to make it fit right. Any one ever come accross this problem please much help is needed. I would post pictures but I do not know how...

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
Not sure if i got this correct, but sitting on V-6 mounts? Or sitting in the 6 cyl position? There should be another set of holes in the frame to move everything forward a couple of inches. Sometimes the vette low valve covers with the notch at the rear gives you a little more room.

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
yes by moving it from the I6 mount location to the V8 mount location you will gain a few inches, my farthers 72 was done the same way by the PO, its pretty straight forward to do....by the way welcome to the board you submit pictures by clicking on manage attachments..then just browse and find the pics u want to upload

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
I would really like to see a few pics of how they adapted the I6 stands, especially in a 72.

If you want it correct, why not just purchase some big block perches and do it up correct, that or find you a big sledge and smack the firewall a few times. |

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
I know those taller valve covers aren't helping with clearance. My opinion is move everything forward to the V-8 set of holes. You may have to have a driveshaft made, or lengthen the one you have. It looks like this would be the time to do it. I think you will be happier in the long run. Other option is massage the firewall till everything clears. How tight is the dist.? Eric

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
Performance online: tubular towers with new rubber mounts 129. ish or upgrade to poly mounts for a little more. Easier than hunting down 72 only mounts for more $$$$.

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
I dunno... it looks like the engine mounts are as tightened down as far back (bolts to front of mounts) as they can go. Maybe loosen both mounts and the tranny mounts and shift the whole assy forward. It looks like you will gain a couple inches that way. Any more and your cooling fans may start interfeing with your belt system.

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
I placed my BBC between the two holes for weight transfer and clearence up front.
I first adapted a 73+ SBC tower, and they work great on 67-71 trucks, but on a 72 you will not be happy. The motor sits upward at a goofy angle, too high in the center, and the valve covers hit the PB booster. I've since found the correct 72 only towers from a board member. They were pricey, but I searched ebay and CL for litteraly 6 months for them. The Performance Online tubular ones look pretty dinky to me. Being as I am building a street/strip monster, I didnt trust them. Also, I couldnt confirm if they would fit right in a 72, though they claim it. DUe to the differences in the frame/x member, I dont see how one that fits a 67-71 will work the exact same way. Thats awsome and a DAMN good price if ECE carries them. Someone needs to repop these damn things. Good luck and PM me if you have any questions

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
That's probably just the motor mounts... not the brackets that bolt to the frame.

Re: 454BB valve cover hitting firewall!
performance online has tubular mounts for good price they went in pretty easy i used the front holes and have alot of room in back can pull an hei dist with no problem. bad thing is no room up front so like someone above said make some holes in between which would be perfect. i cant even use electric fan because the water pump hits the fan. the only reason i left it like that is because i was to lazy to drill frame for trans crossmember
