Re: What did you get done? 03/30

I worked on saturday . . ...... again.

Today I worked on the 74 for a change. I fabbed up all the various pieces for adding some helper air-bags during my c-section install. I plan to weld the necessary brackets to the c-section & then bolt the c-sections in (they're the bolt-in variety from Western Chassis). I'll add some 'insurance welds' @ the corners & ends of the c-sections similar to what I did on my 68.

I'll re-use my old 2gal ART air-tank & Thomas 315 air compressor that were sitting on a shelf, along w/some smaller Firestone F6781 (255c'c) airbags in a bag over axle set-up similar to Rokcrln's LoBuck build.

So the brackets are all cut, fitted, & semi-prepped for welding them all together. Everything has been marked for the frame cut (c-notch was used to create a template for the part of the frame getting cut out), & the bed floor 'runners' were marked where necessary for clearance/removal.

Hopefully next weekend will allow everything to come together quickly since I've tried to prep as much as possible before taking the truck apart (seems to be an issue w/my builds).

Re: What did you get done? 03/30

I got the rear of my '86 stripped to the bare frame. I'm waiting on the "rear kit" from Porterbuilt Street Rods, and the Dropmember for the front. I know it doesn't look like much,... but the PO used a welder instead of bolts. Lots of grinding! I even had what was left of an old reciever hitch brackets welded to the frame rails. Also the driveshaft was so long that the rearend had to be unbolted to remove the driveshaft. Why the back of the tranny tailshaft didn't break,... I'll never know.

Finished "fixing" all semi major issues with my truck. The only thing I need now is a gear reducer for the spedo cable, and some body work w/ primer. I can't wait till I can get the time to do it.

Re: What did you get done? 03/30

Well got some minor stuff done. Replaced the wiper arms on the firebird, changed the oil in the new motor to synthetic checked the other cars they all were good. Managed to install the widshield on my ladys new bike and got the front yard grass thatched. Next weekend should be a real joy with the back yard needing attention.

Pressure washed the engine compartment to get it ready for paint. Removed the old "hacked up" wheel wells. Ordered a few parts from LMC. Covered the truck just in time for it to start raining. Worked on the 454 in the garage.

Re: What did you get done? 03/30

Put a new used engine into my 86 farm truck and got it running. Soon discovered that it had a major vaccum leak, which I quickly discovered was around the throttle blade shafts. The truck is now sitting on the back burner till I decide to go pull a 4 barrel from the wrecking yard and get it running again later on this spring.

Found a set of heads for my turbo 6.2L tonight, and will probably pick them up later on this week. I'll have to wait on my new headgaskets and ARP head studs to arrive in the mail before I can install them, but once they are in, I can have my engine put back together pretty quickly afterwards.

Re: What did you get done? 03/30

I installed the swap meet find.A decent JVC shaft style radio in my truck. No more singing to myself or foolish thinking while driving. The thinking part was costing me money and making me feel old. Also fought with 2 small interior lights I picked up,to add color when the doors are opened or using dome light. After scratching my head for about a 1/2 hour, realized that the cheap plastic chrome on the marker light housing is conductive. After blowing a hand full of fuses,it dawned on me.Made a couple of nylon bushings. Then helped the wife get ready for her yard sale next weekend.I'm gaining a lot of lost floor space. In garage and storage shed.Man I hate having stacks of boxes, just setting around. If you haven't used or opened the box is 6 months you don't need it.A tough fight to win.

Re: What did you get done? 03/30

Put the top back on my K-5 and moved it outside. It was taking up too much room in the garage, and i didn't feel like working on any of my more significant projects as a result.

Aquired all the gaskets, rtv, touch up painr, etc. -- to do an engine freshen up for the cruising season.

Discovered a nice red ATF spot under my '75. It doesnt get driven , so i will cope with that later in the week (thinking its the front seal)-- might take the tranny in for a pro to change the seals and flush it out --- i hate leaks

Re: What did you get done? 03/30

Worked all Saturday.

Started hangin the new garage door opener today only to find out I needed a piece of perforated angle iron after the hardware store closed.

So I pieced together a double pumper for the truck. I'll install it later this week.

Re: What did you get done? 03/30

got the exhaust welded up on the slug. also found water in the tranny, changed fluid and filter, will probably have to do it a few more times or just drop tranny and flush it out. drove the truck around the block a few times, my 2 sons realy enjoyed that. swaped out my intake bolts for the new button head stainless bolts i picked up friday.

Re: What did you get done? 03/30

Got up early Saturday and hit Pick and Pull. I got a windshild, speedo cable, fuel door, window motor and regulator, kicker panels, door locks, and other odds and ends. they said they would have 2 new rows of chevy stuff...but i got there and there were just two empty rows. So no bench seat, they seem to be the first thing to go. Got home and washed my engine, boy did it need it! there was easily and inch of grease coating everything...turns out my engine is blue. Oh, i also looked at my blinkers and it looks like it is the switch in the column....haven't opened it up yet.

Sunday, i pulled my door trim off and painted it with wrinkle finish (same as my dash). while the trim was off i replaced the locks...final i can lock my truck. Put in the new window motor and regulator....the motor is JUNK and will probably seize next it starts raining and i want to roll up my window. (im going to have to pull it out next weekend and return it to the yard, and pick up another.) started some body work. I also put spacers in my tailgate rubber so it doesn't rattle when i go over bumps...worked great.

And the BEST part of my weekend...when i was at the junk yard i grabbed a lighter, Sunday when i was cleaning up i found it and tossed it in the socket then went shopping with my GF. Came home and the cab of my truck looked hazy...yup the lighter was slowly burning. My truck now REEKS of electrical smoke.

Here is the list of things i wanted to get done this weekend...I did better then i thought...sort of.

I have a rather large list of what i want to get done...

1. go to pick and pull and get about 10 odds and ends that are missing or broken...and install
2. get my freaking blinkers working
3. Start some body work and prep for paint
4. clean and paint engine bay
5. replace valve cover seals, clean and paint valve covers
6. replace water pump
7. clean and paint air filter
8. replace drives side window motor (if i find one at P&P)
9. replace windshield (if i find one at P&P)
10. rattle can rear window frame
11. pound the dent out of my rear bumper
12. remove my front bumper, polish and clean it (leave it off for paint)
13. clean and polish tool box
14. not get dumped by my girlfriend for spending every waking hour with my truck and not her.

What i actually think will get done?
1. blinkers
2. pick and pull
3. clean engine bay
4. water pump
5. maybe one or to others if I'm lucky.

After reading this i remember some ofter stuff i did but didn't mention: numbers 10,11, and 14.
