Re: Ring and Pinion question

Lurch. On the top of the right hand axel tube there is a series of numbers and letters. Record them and go to your local Chevy store and they can tell you what it wqas equiped with when it was built. Gears may have been changed, if they were the ID info won't mean anything, so be ware. You can check the ratio without counting teeth but you'll still have to pull the cover. Look on the edge of the ring gear for a series of numbers. Your looking for 4 numbers that look like this "15:41". 15 is the # of teeth on the pinion & 41 is the # of teeth on the ring. Devide 41 by 15 and you got it. It's the only way to be absolutely sure of whats in there, jim

Re: Ring and Pinion question

you mean a series of numbers like

1235401
16411283??

oh, and the truck is original yet minus a few typical maintaince things like plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and the battery....so i am gonna guess that if i go for that number on the axle tube that it will work for me

Re: Ring and Pinion question

Lurch: Number on axel tube will; be alphanumeric and is usually under 6" from the pumpkin on the right (passengers side) top of tube. It's going to be difficult to read, age, rust, ect. The numbers on the ring gear will be next to a 7 or 8 didget part number. They are ALWAYS a 4 didget number with a : inbetween the 2nd and third number, like this 15:41. If you have just numbers on the tube or the pumpkin unbolts (no rear cover) it might be a Chrysler or Ford rear. Kind of unlikely but one never knows what a PO did. Hope this helps, jim
