Help, Window felt and rubber issues

The shop that painted my truck is having a hard time with the horizontal window felts and rubber weatherstripping that I purchased from a board vendor. He is basically saying they wont stay in place very well.

Is ther "better" quality felts and rubber available? Any suggestions?

Seems like the reproduction ones have a lip on there that catches on the metal rail under the glass when you roll the window up, maybe the felt side not so bad but the outside rubber one wanted to catch on the window rail when rolled up. Our one truck the 68 still has the problem, but it was real bad on the 70 for some reasom.

We got lucky and found some original GM rubbers and felts to put on the 70 and that fixed the problem.

I don't know if that is much help, but if anyone is making repros that dont catch the window that would be great.

The felts should have clips on them that are held in on the backside with some thick black gooey stuff. They just clip in, and then as they get hot I suppose they kind of heat up and stick to the doors. Don't know of any particular place that has quality ones.

I'm redoing my doors right now. I'll be interested to see how my felt & rubber fit. If that "lip" is a problem, can't it be shaved off?

I just did mine last month on both doors. I ordered the complete rubber kit from JC whitney and every thing fit great. 179.00 I think also came with front and rear glass rubber to.

I need to replace mine. What exactly is involved? Do you have to remove the windows?

The windows don't have to be removed to replace the fuzzies. I use a windshield clip removal tool to pull the old ones and then with the window rolled all the way down it is a matter of inserting the clips and snapping the seals in place. It helps if you have someone help you as the retaining slots are hard to see when inserting the clips.

It is best to do any trimming that is needed before installation.

If you are doing all the rubber than the windows need to come out. I did all even the vent windows. I couldn't drive past 35 without horrable wind noise. Now it's nice and tight and can't wait to try her out. lol that sounded alittle perverted.

Just finished mine. They fit just fine and stay in place. I didn't have any specail tools to get the felt & rubber out so it used a thin screwdriver:



Not the best tool, but I was carefull. In some places, the slot on the window opening bent out a bit. I was carefull to bend them back flat so the clips would "grab". Maybe your slots are bent out. If so, try pushing them flush with the surface and try 'er again.

I bought mine from GMC Pauls IIRC. I replaced all the door window fuzzies and glass channels felts. To do that, you need to take out the wing windows. I was done in a couple of hours. My favorite tool for this job is a flat BBQ skewer. It allows me to unclip the old felts with minimal damage to the paint

Thats where I bought mine. They seeem to pull up very easily. Any suggestions?

My truck was just painted so the wing window was out. This guy does big dollar restorations so I am sure he knows what he is doing. He is a good guy so he will take any suggestions I give him to keep them from pulling up/off so easy!

I just wanted to add. My truck didn't come with the stainless trim on the fuzzies but that is what Paul sent me, that shouldn't matter should it?

Stainless shouldn't matter. I don't know of anything that would keep them from pulling up unless they never clipped well. These parts are flexible to a point, and I have always had to massage them into place. If your installer is a trusted pro, then he has probably massaged them as much as he is comfortable with.

When I installed the fuzzies on my nova wagon rear window, the holes in the door didn't line up on most of the clips. It took a great deal of pulling and prodding to get them to all hook in. I also believe it took some persuasion from a rubber mallet.

it's a good scrach prevention to wrap electrical tape on the tools you use to prevent paint damage and the botoms of your spray cans.463

i did mine today and mine looks just like jayharrels does is it suppose to be like that? half and half?

i found out the door seperates. Pull the vent window out, right under the vent window is a piece of metal, about 2 inches wide, that holds the inside and out side door skins together, or at least at the right distance apart. Mine broke loose from the inside skin and caused the door to bow out, throwing the gap between the rubber and the window off.

I squeezed it to the right distance with my hand, and hit it with a spot weld. Problem solved.

Make sure the clips on the fuzzies are nice and tight. If they are "loose", that will cause them to pull off easy. You can use a pair of pliers to bend them in so they clip to the door tighter. Make sure also that the slots on the door are not all bent out. You can straighten them with a screwdriver fairly easily.

The door fuzzy re-pops are junk in my opinion. I went with a set of NOS ones and they fit perfect. The repops I have did not even make contact with the window, allowing water/air in, making them worthless.

WOW...I am sure glad I bought the extra NOS "fuzzy's" from you after hearing the headaches with the repops.

So, who has the NOS? I gotta do mine as well (my driver's door window is metal to metal) and I don't want to do it twice.
