Re: cam question?
1/4 race, 1/2 race, etc., etc., etc. don't mean anything anymore (haven't for 20 years). You'll need to supply things like lobe separation, lift @ .050, etc, for anybody to help now
Go to www.chevyhiperformance.com and look for the budget mouse build. One of the first things they do is switch out for a set of new vortec heads (w/matching intake manifold) and a cam. Should be just about $1000 (if you do the labor yourself) and it will do what you want. |

Re: cam question?
If what you're after is "sound", then you don't need better heads
Agree that the "quarter/half/full" race stuff is meaningless. It's actually OVERLAP that makes lope; this is the time that the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time. You can find overlap by EC - IO; Exhaust Closing - Intake Opening. Anything in the 70s or so is going to give you "lope". The problem with high overlap is that it's generally an unstreetable cam as it's made for high RPM. CompCams "Thumpr" line are cams that have significant overlap, but reasonable duration and lift for the street. |

Re: cam question?
What determines the lope on a cam is the duration which is usually reated at .050. The higher the number of the duration the more of a lope. The lope is caused by how long between the intake valve opening and the exhaust valve opening. Hope this helps you out but 1/4 cam does not mean anything.

If what you're after is "sound", then you don't need better heads - that's for making power, not just noise

You can find overlap by EC - IO; Exhaust Closing - Intake Opening. Anything in the 70s or higher is going to give you "lope", depending on displacement, etc. The problem with high overlap is that it's generally an unstreetable cam for duration, lift, etc. as it's made for high RPM.
