Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
Seems like it's a good deal, but again you won't know until you show up and look it over. Just like a phat chick, may look great in a photo from the neck up...
A few weeks ago my buddy bought a "mint 67K original miles" 86 SS monte carlo off of ebay. We drove 600 miles to pick it up only to fine out it was 167K miles at least, rust everywhere and crappy repaint. He didn't buy it. We drove 1200 miles to look at a car for less than 10 minutes. So we learned a lessen there. All I'm saying is that don't let the excitment let you make a bad decision.

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
A motor is like most other things, if you put it together right and use decent parts, along with proper maintenance, it should be fine. I don't know that there is a motor to "stay away from" as much as " I would rather have"! IMO it's more preferrance and "WANT".

There is a cult following to the 307. You would be hardpressed to sell a tired 305, but the 307 would sell in a heartbeat.

Buy this one for $2500 and go offer $500 on that 69 you posted in the other thread and have a cheap parts truck?

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
Engines are relatively cheap compared to complete trucks. I'd personally buy a nice solid truck with no engine instead of one that ran excellent but the body was rough.

I'd scoop that up. Body looks straight, + it's lowered already. You can always swap motors at a later date...

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
That's another thing to check for, make sure it was lowered properly. Fixing someone else's mistakes can get very expensive!

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
I wouldn't spend anything over $2500, I might offer $2k and see? A 307 will run forever, I am however worried about a stall and th400, sounds like it was beat on a bit and they put the 307 in there. Rust in the floor is PITA, rockers, kick panels, etc, etc cab supports as well. I walk away from anything with rust in those areas, unless it is a great deal. Doing it yourself then those are inexpensive fixes, but pay someone and it'll be twice what you pay for. Good luck looks OK.

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
well im one step closer to getting a truck we have the money. and for that other truck i posted it was a scam
But the guy with this truck said he would take 1500 for the truck without the wheels and tires. The tires have been sitting on the truck for 10 years so my dad is thinking it prob has some dry rotting on it. So if we do buy it, it will be without the wheels and tires. And one more thing the guy said that the motor and trans dont really match up. the trans is more set up for drag and the motor doesnt have enough power to support the trans or something.I dont really know anything about trans. Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
for that price and if the rust is very limited, I would take it without the motor. I looked at one this weekend, that was a rust bucket, bed was non fixable, the cab doors, corners and floor was rusted and he wouldn't take any less than 2300. looks like a nice truck

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
I had a '95 Chevy 1500 with a 305 and a 5 speed and I beat the hell out of that thing and never tore the engine up. I put a clutch in it (pulled the tranny 3 times before I figured out I had the release bearing in wrong), put an EGR valve on it, water pump and alternator. That's it! It had 50,000mi when I got it and 187,000mi when it left and I never touched the engine except to put plugs in it. I only did that once I think at about 100,000mi. So I wouldn't worry about the engine....the tranny on the other hand...??? You might want to count on working on that. TH350 used for $100 or rebuilt for $500 should do it. Or better yet, convert it to a manual.

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb
I'm no expert but I will chime in anyway.
I wouldn't buy it. sounds like you'd be putting a lot of money into it. I've seen trucks for $2500 in better condition. If it's been in a barn in Texas, why does it have rust? Also, like 70rs/ss said, it sounds like it was beat on a bit and they just stuck the 307 in there. If it was a drag truck I would be leary.
