New 1991 Suburban

I'm normally over in the 67-72 trucks side of things, but I'll take a shot here for a second.

I just picked up a 91 Sub 2WD 1/2 Ton for $250. Dented but mostly rustless body, runs, new battery and radiator, 350 and a 4 speed automatic. A good friend of mine was going to scrap it, but offered it to me instead. I couldn't pass it up for that price. Now to the point, I believe this rig should have a 700R4 or a 4L60 possibly 4L60E, and is there any indication from below which tranny it is? I plan to eventually swap this tranny in place of the powerglide in the 67 Chevelle I'm buying tomorrow (after selling my '06 cobalt).

Sorry for the long windedness (sic), but I'm pumped that I picked up another rig, and getting another tomorrow! Any help or diagrahms would be great.

I would say being a 91 it would be a 700r4. THE 4L60 was just coming out at that time.

hope this helps

Re: New 1991 Suburban

I looked under it this morning and confirmed 700R4, but didn't get a look at the speedometer provision. Now I'm wondering if a 1991 would have an electronic speedo. If so, I'll have to source a mechanical conversion/gears. Any suggestions?

Yes, I don't think it is mechanical.

Re: New 1991 Suburban

91 will be electronic.

4L60E started in 1993. 4L80E started in 1991, but in the 1 Ton's.

Re: New 1991 Suburban

I have a 91 R2500 (3/4 ton, 2WD) with 454 and it has the 4L80E.
I was curious about this as well since I understood that the 91 burb has the mechanical since it is the 87-older truck body style and parts... and the electronic was not used until 1992 with the burbs and 88 with trucks. That was my understanding.
Oh well it is going to be sold soon since it is rarely used and just eating up insurance money not being driven.

Re: New 1991 Suburban

I've got a '90 V2500 with 350/TH400/NP241 transfer case and it has the electronic speedo in it.

Re: New 1991 Suburban

Anything after 1987 will have an electronic speedo for the VSS signal to the ECM.

Not exactly true. Depending on wether its a 3spd auto or an overdrive and if it's a 4wd if it's running a 208 T-Case or a NP231(241?) T-Case.

Your local dealership will be able to run your V.I.N. # for as old as 1990 models.

Re: New 1991 Suburban

My dad just removed the dash bezel (for his 84) and it is an electric speedo.

I have a new question...

Will I be able to run a mechanical fuel pump on this motor. There is a boss for it on the block, but is there a cam within the motor to drive the rod and therefore the pump?

Yes sir..

You will have to get a rod that runs on the cam and you should be good to go..

Re: New 1991 Suburban

Frank the tank is now dead. Life has been given to my Chevelle. Actually came out pretty well, I'll toss up picks tomorrow.

Thanks for the tranny info.
