What did you get done? 04/06

I spent the weekend going to nine different stores trying to find the "right" patio furniture with my wife. Fortunately we finally found what she wanted, and I could afford all at the same time. At the same time, but not at the same location. Two more trips and a smoking Gold card later and we ended the day.

I did get a chance to drop in on the local car cruise. The weather was awesome so the hot rods were out. Today I assembled all the new furniture and then kicked back and tested it out.

What did you get done?

Re: What did you get done? 04/06

Didn't get as much done as I would have liked, rain all weekend. I did manage to strip a door and fender. Both were then sprayed with 3 coats of epoxy primer. I'm off this week so my weekend will be a really long one.

Re: What did you get done? 04/06

Planned on going to local cruise Sat. night, but the rain here was bad Friday and Saturday.
Got my new gas tank, got bored and cleaned it up and sprayed some rattle can on it...
The 6.0/4l80e should be here this week!!! Maybe this weekend I can recruit some help to pull the 305/th350. My Father in law is letting me use his big shop for the swap.
Did get the yard mowed Friday after work before it started raining.

Re: What did you get done? 04/06

I demolished my old '87 R-10 pickup. I suspected that the rust damage was just too bad to even deal with so I wanted to part it out. I decided that I wanted the front suspension and rear axle, a friend wanted the engine and trans, and my mechanic friend wanted the fuel injection set-up for his old '85 Burb.
I picked this up last September for $200 from a guy one of my friends works with. He added the naked ladies on the fenders. The truck has been a WI truck for it's whole life, and aparently from the damage found, not well taken care of either. I purchased the truck for the short wheel base frame for a future project. I should of looked over the truck a little closer before purchase. The frame was by far the worst part of the truck, along with the cab.
The frame was cracked half way up on the driver side, I think the only thing that held it together was the fuel tank bracket that was mounted on both sides of the crack. There were several spots on the frame where it had rusted through and was paper thin. Here are some pics of what the damage was.
Here is a before shot:

Here is a few rust piles just from moving and shaking the truck:

Here's the driver side floor

We did chop it too:

Shot of the tow rig for the day:

I would normally hate cutting a square body truck apart, but I had no other choice. Now the trailer is full of chunks of frame, cab, and bed.

I hate to see one retired...

I got my 454 put into the '87 R10 this weekend... I'm beat!

Still got wiring to clean up, install ignition, fuel and cooling systems. Hoping to get her running for next weekend's trip to Gatlinburg, TN.

ripped my 305 out, it was a blast, first timer, cant wait to put my 350 in. cleaned out my poll barn and garage. raked some of my yard until the rake broke in half, power washed all my trucks underneath to get all the salt off and washed them afterward, and then relaxed and drank some bruskys

Re: What did you get done? 04/06

well it was nasty this sunday but saturday was nice out. I recieved some of my interior pieces bought from Beaterc10 and a guy on ebay so after checking them out i set them aside.
My truck had been making this wierd noise every time i hit the brakes and it seemed like the brakes werent working right. I pulled off the wheels and the fronts looked ok about half on the front pads and the rubber lines looked ok so i went and inspected my front end and found i need the sleeves and tie rod ends and the lower ball joints have some play so i added that to the list of things to do to my truck
It was then onto the back and the left rear took me like half an hour to get off the freakin drum. Once i did get it off i dound the shoe was cracked and the wheel cylinder was weeping a tad so i went to my local parts store and bought a pair of wheel cylinders hardware and shoes.
Of course this doesnt go easy cause the one wheel cylinder ( if youre gonna change one may as well change two) was defective and that had to go back and the left one when i tried to get the steel line out snapped so i had to run back again and get that
well several hours later i got it all together and bled ( wife helped) and we rode around a while and sure enough it not only stops better but it dont feel like im hauling 5000 lbs behind me when im accellerating so hopefully this will do something for the really poor gas mileage
During the week i hope to get the interior panels together and im going to make an effort to get to the junk yard to get the speakers so i can rig all that up
next week i may be able to get it all in there..
I still have to mess with the drivers side window as that doesnt go down and i know the window track felt is jammed
it never ends when you have an old truck

Re: What did you get done? 04/06

I worked on installing my c-notches in the 74.

I modified some Western-Chassis bolt-in notches for some 'helper' airbags similar to what board member Rokrln did on his very cool LowBuk build-up.

I got everything fabbed up & bolted/welded in but ran out of light & couldn't get the bed back on. Hopefully I'll get it finished up Mon or Tuesday. It will be nice to finally be able to put some weight in the bed & not have to worry about the rear-end hitting the frame while driving down the road (7" rear drop & no c-sections).

Also went & saw local band 'Drowning Pool' play a show in Ft.Worth Sat night. It was weird going to a hard rock show when the avg age is half of yours . Seems the club thing these days is chicks all over chicks & dying your hair some Kool-aid color.

Re: What did you get done? 04/06

First weekend in I can't remember when that I actually worked on a vehicle.

Spent Friday afternoon installing a Light Truck Megashifter into the K5. After getting that done I pulled the Edelbrock 600 off and did a rebuild. I haven't been able to get it tuned right and finally decided a full rebuild would set me back to a known starting point. Got it all back together in time to pick up the kids and head to the school carnival Friday night. Could tell it was running REAL lean the whole way there...decided to hold off until Saturday to mess with it.

Woke up Saturday and came to the realization that I was tired of messing with the 600 and went and pulled the brand new Thunder 800 off the motor in the truck. WOW!! Wish I would have done this earlier....TOTALLY woke the 383 up and runs damn near perfect right out of the box. Running it lean on Friday seems to have eaten a few plugs, so I'll replace those this week. But I can't believe how much better it runs now. Night and Day.

Gonna spend this week finishing up small things in order to have it ready for a small local show here on Saturday.

Worked two 12 hour shifts and now I'm back at home for Monday, then I gotta go back for another 6 12's in a row. On Sunday I'm putting the truck in a show I found out about yesterday while searching for a car wash.

Got the 72 out of the yard and into the garage after a year of sinking into the mud. It got tagged by the town cop Friday. He said there was a list of 140 vehicles to be tagged. Getting the truck out of the yard was no fun. The yard is so wet and muddy with having the 10th wettest March on record in Indiana. Also burnt some brush and drank some silver bullets.

Re: What did you get done? 04/06

I actually bought my first fullsize truck and had it trailered to my condo this past weekend. It's a 1981 GMC short bed 2wd 6 cylinder. It's in really good shape, but I spent the rest of the weekend trying to get it to start. I drove it around for 20 minutes before I bought it, and I watched the guy fire it up to get it off the trailer saturday morning, but I cant get it to start. It keeps reminding me of Back to the Future where Biff always brags that he's the only one that can start his 40 Ford convertible...

Re: What did you get done? 04/06

Friday i cleaned the house and did laundry...as to prevent my GF from telling me to stop working on the truck and start helping her clean.

Saturday was freaking beautiful, went down to the beach and flew a kite, windy as heck, got that thing into orbit. The wind was kicking up some good waves so i did some body surfing. We got back from the beach at about 5, slept until 6...then went to a BBQ and cracked some beers.

Sunday morning got a late start, took a couple of hours to shake off the hang-over. Went to the junkyard grabbed a handful of bumper bolts and an electric fan. got home at about 2 the sky was looking a little dark but i figured i had an hour or two, so i started installing the bolts and then decided to go ahead and put in the speedo cable i got last week...about ten minutes after i started it POURED, i was soaked in seconds. So like the addict i am i said screw it, pulled my truck into the car wash bay at my apartment, and pulled the water pump i had been meaning to do for the last 3 weekends, and install my new fan. A couple hours later new pump was installed and so was the fan...well the fan is in place but i didn't run any wires. I can't believe how much of a BEAST the stock fan is! Freaking thing is deadly to...i cut myself at least 8 times on it. Anyway i took the truck out for a spin with the new set up....holy cow! It is like a new truck, i must have let loose at least 20hp! It runs smoother, and is way more responsive, i'm sure it will get better MPG too. It feels way more refined too. I highly recommend swapping out the old fan for an electric one...best $15 i have spent so far.

I swapped on a set of Vortec L29 7.4L heads for my never ending fuel injection project on my ’78 K10. Came up short on a couple exhaust manifold studs for the driver side so I should get those today and have it wrapped up tonight and start it up to see how well these heads work out.

This project is starting to get old.. I just want to drive it already!

Worked on the '73 on Sunday... power washed the engine and bay, then painted the engine black, installed an Edelbrock Performer intake, Quadrajet carb, HEI distributor and wires... Looks great! I have pics on my phone, but no way to send them...
