Alright some backround info first. I run an auto repair facility in michigan and one of our customers had a 1967 c-10 that i always wanted to get my hands on one day. He would come in every couple of months for some small repair and everytime i wished he would just sell me the damn thing allready. Finally his sone was driving the truck while at school and he hot something on the RF and the dad did not want to fix it and wanted to get rid of it. I picked up the truck for a great price and got started right away. The reason i allways wanted to buy this truck was when i got into the automotive industry as a younger kid I allways promised my dad that i would build him a 67 c-10 when I had some free time and extra money (It was his dream) well 2 years ago my dad passed away and i never had a chance to build him his truck. Well here is my chance! The truck was in decent condition when i got it (besides the RF fender) but i decided i wanted to do it right and do a complete frame off with all the goodies. I have never built a classic from the ground up and i knew it would be a challange. I am 2 months into the build and i wanted to share my progress. I plan on having the truck done by june first which wil make it a total of 4 months to do a frame off (as you can see i have my work cut out for me) I am doing everything my self on this one. I have never done any body work or paint before so that will be the largest challange but a freind of mine owns a body shop and he is going to tech me the ins and outs.
Plans for the truck:
Relocated fuel tank
front disc brakes
power steering
power brakes
shaved rails
shaved cab seam
2 tone paint (custom silver metallic upper, jet black lower)
20 inch Black 6 spoke wheels with polished lips
possible air bags
400ci built small block (approx 550 hp)
t350 trans w/ shift kit
stall convertor
complete interior (modern with buckets and custom center console)
2 10 inch subwoofers premium sound
new custom gauges
shaved dash
and whatever comes up along the way

Looks like it will be a blast....

Sent the cab out to media blaster - found some rust underneath the primer any an old school braze job - no problem though just a litle extra work





Shaved the drip rails anyways so a little extra metal work is no problem

Before i started to shave my drip rails i was looking for some info on how to do this properly. I couldnt find any real good info so i just kind of winged it. For anyone wondering it really isnt that hard just kind of time consuming. I slowly cut off the door drips and tacked every 6 inchs or so until i had it completely off (remember the rear cab metal, inner cab metal and door all meet up here) it is important to tack as you go or the panels will seperate.



Then i cut out a piece of sheet metal the with of the door jamb to the outside of the cab and bent it into the proper shape.


Then slowly tack in the piece of steel staggering the welds so you dont warp anything and then stich weld the entire piece and grind down your welds - make sure you get full penetration into the layers of steel that make up the structural support of the cab.




Then use body filler to cover the welds and make the final shape i used duraglass because i am used to working with it and it is very strong. Then use some self etching primer and spray the area. I have not dont the final yet but i am going to spray some high build primer on the areas and block it out








Make sure you re-hang the door if they are off so that the lines meet up perfect.

I blasted the frame off and painted it with a product called chassis saver in a satin black then re-installed the rear diff and installed an mcgaughys 2 1/2 lower spindles, cut the springs and installed a disc brake front setup. Everything went together great but it seems like one of the rotors may have a slightly off bolt pattern because i can only get 2 lug nuts on (shank style) i am toying with the thought of installing bags on the truck that is why i just cut the springs for now. not sure if i am going to make the air leap maybe some people can let me know the pros and cons - esp with handling i am building a monster 400 sbc for the truck and need it to plant well


I sprayed the spindles, calipers and rotors with high temp black paint to avoid rust. I found the easiest way to make the calipers look good was to spray the whole thing then just re-machine the braking surface







I will be attaching the cab to the frame this weekend with new mounts

The truck goes out for cut in paint next week then i can start re-assembling the whole thing. I am painting it two tone, silver metallic and gloss black with a silver pinstrip seperating the colors. I cant wait!! So while the truck is gone it is time to build the engine i am using a 2 bolt 400ci block with stock crank, rods and forged flat top pistons, dart heads with 215 runners and 208 valves, port matched and polished runners and intake, custom grind 600 lift cam holley intake, holly street avenger 750 carb, proform roller rockers and i am powdercoating the old shool holley valve covers and the new intake just got the heads this weekend and it is really making me itch to put this engine together!!!

great work so far. looks like you've made some pretty good progress.

what are your plans with the cab seam? i'm going to shave mine too, but and considering just using filler instead of welding. thoughts?

I am going to make a couple of stitch welds to keep the filler from moving and cracking then fill with filler

Shaving the drip rails is fun huh? Been there done that... I even have the t-shirt!

i like that idea. add a little strength, but don't kill yourself with the grinding and shaping. i think i'll do the same.
