Any idea what broke?

When I my truck is under load there is a rattle around the bell housing area, it doesnt do it when the truck is in Neutral/Park. I talked to my tranny guy on the phone and he said it sounds like my flex plate may have broken or maybe the converter wasnt bolted in correctly when the PO installed the new motor. Does that sound rigt to anyone else? He quoted me $300-350 if its the flex plate

Thanks for any input

Re: Any idea what broke?

Sounds right to me, the price sounds about right for Denver as well. He has to disconnect the trans, either slide it back or drop it down to replace the flexplate. If its a 2wd that is about 2-4 hours work, if its a 4x4 then its more because you have more to remove and replace. The flexplate itself is only about $20-$60 depending on what it fits.

Put it up on jack stands, rotate the engine by hand and check the converter bolts. If they are tight the flexplate is probably cracked, its common with Chevy. IMO they use cheaper/thinner steel for the Chevy plates, as I have never broken a Ford, Pontiac, Buick, or Olds flexplate, but have changed hundreds of Chevy plates.

Re: Any idea what broke?

You got lucky! I bought a 88 s15 Jimmy when I was 17 for 400 bux because the owner thought the motor was knocking.. .I tightened the converter bolts and put over 100k on that sucker with nothing but an alternator and starter swap. And I brought it back to stock ride height. I put a low mile motor in it because it was getting weak and I never put it back on the road.

I bought a 79 Trans Am in the mid 90's this same way ($300). Tighted the bolts, and away we went!

Great news for you!

Re: Any idea what broke?

I bought an 82 Diesel Jimmy with about 50 000 miles on it for that reason as well. Flywheel bolts backed out hit the block and sheared off. Couldn't have knocked more than a couple times when she shut it down and parked it.

Went out there in -5F weather, put two batteries in and hooked my truck up to the starter side, and fired it right up no problem. Ran beautiful, hardly smoked even with it being that cold. No engine noise.

Changed the flywheel and torque converter and had a fantastic running truck Last a heard it is still being daily driven by a friend of a board member here
