Welp..I cranked my torsion bars....Update!!
It's done.
It dropped 3" Right onto the snubbers Guess I need to cut the snubbers in half. I took the bolt all the way down til it was flush with the upper block. Guess if I want it any lower, gonna have to buy drop spindles, or bag it. carry on..!

Re: Welp..I cranked my torsion bars....
Ok. Finally time to post pics.
I really wanted it lower, but the bars are max low. They're sitting right on the snubbers. ***Can I cut the snubber and mount down to gain another inch???*** Then I went to drop the back some, but if I do, it raises the front some... So..I may have to roll this way until I can gather the remaining airride stuff to bag it. Much improvement over what it looked like when i brought it home 2 weeks ago.

Re: Welp..I cranked my torsion bars....
Not yet chief.
How much of the snubber can I cut? It's sitting on that c shaped pad. I figure I can trim that... Or should I just remove it? If I go longer bolts, will it throw the frontend way outta whack??? If I could get another 1 1/2, I'd be ok with that for now. Then drop the back 3" more. I have half the stuff I need for bags, but don't wanna do that til fall.

Re: Welp..I cranked my torsion bars....
Those bump stops are really easy to cut with a sawzall. They also pull out. But now that your torsion bar adjusters are hanging way down, a good and safe idea is to remove them from the control arms and turn them one spline. That puts them back to the stock adjustment and still keeps the truck low. Otherwise they drag on speed bumps, driveways, gas station entrances, etc. Then you could end up finding out the hard way, like I did, that those bolt heads don't last very long and break. Mine broke doing 60 mph and dug into the pavement about an inch and a half. Shot me off the road and gave me a pretty interesting ride!

Re: Welp..I cranked my torsion bars....
I understand what you're saying, but...
Those bolts and rear bar mounts are still pretty high off the ground. I have a pretty tall tire. My old 64 had 205/15's, and this has 235/15's. I think even if it drops another 1/2" to 1" up front, and I drop the back 2-3", those bolts are still higher than the mufflers and front c/m. I'm still open to suggestions and opinions. Thanks

Re: Welp..I cranked my torsion bars....
Grumpy,
Looks Good, I understand the wish for lower. From the looks of your ride height my Burb must be about bottomed out as well cause it's about the same as mine.... "spindles are on the shelf out in the shed....." Let me know if you want them there just hanging out..... Looks good you got a great start there.... Enjoy it.... |

haha. Nope, not this time. They are used radial tires with new Port-a-walls!!! I've bought at least 12 sets of new $700. radial www's in the last 6 or so years... Being laid-off, went the cheap way. My buddy is a dealer for MooN, so he bought 6 sets of portawalls. I got them from him. I'm going to cut the snubber, then see how much more it drops up front, then adjust the back down some. Alittle too much of a rake for me. Then drive it til I decide to bag it.

Re: Welp..I cranked my torsion bars....
Formed rubber rings that look like wide whitewalls.
you slip the inside 2" inside the bead before you air the tire up, and you have instant www's. i'll look for a pic.

Re: Welp..I cranked my torsion bars....
I've bought new bias-ply www's at about $400+
I've bought way too many sets of radial www's at $700+ These were $80. and I mounted them on a used set of 235/15's So they will serve the purpose for awhile. And no, their not supposed to be used on Radials. But..I've had them on a couple other cars, and they last for 1-2 years, unless you do a ton of highway driving. They look great at 10ft. You can tell they're port-a-walls if you get real close. Suits me fine. **Also...Here's a pic of my old 59 Nomad wagon. it had port-a-walls on it for over 2 years, on Radial tires. They would flap pretty bad when I would do 90mph on the highway though

Hi Imperial Kustom, Can you tell me how difficult a job it is to remove the torsion bars from the control arms and rotate a spline? Are there any tips for doing the job!? How much will one spline move the arm up? I only have 2.5" clearance at the moment and keep hitting them on speed humps Thanks mate, Steve. |
