65 C30

I really need to stop looking at ebay when I'm bored. Here's my latest spur of the moment purchase. 65 Chevy custom cab, big back window, 292 4spd. I've been looking for something to haul my junk around, I think I found it. It was originaly a dealer tow truck, too bad the bed is gone. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. Restore it stock, put a v8 in it or what. I'm open to Idea's and suggestions. These are the ebay pics. I'm going go get it next weekend. Anyone in VA have a realy long trailer I can rent or borrow lol.

Re: 65 C30

I love it! What's the wheelbase on that sucker? And that front bumper is the definition of "hefty". If you don't need to cruise at 75, I'd keep the 292. But then, I'm partial to the old inlines.

The "bump" is probably the PTO knob.

Re: 65 C30

Cool...another member with a C30.It appears to have came with a few options. Looks like the wheelbase is longer than my '66....mine has 10'6" of frame behind the cab with a 157" wheelbase. The 292's aren't bad engines they just aren't good on gas. IMHO you'd be able to get the same or better mpg out of a V8 and have more power. Post some more pics when you get it home.

The wheelbase is 19ft ,262ish inches. That bumper should be fun in traffic let me see a ricer or minivan cut me off now lol. I'm thinking of leaving the 6 in it with a little tweaking, header and 4 barrel. I also have a good 350 I could stick in it untill I find something better. I will mostly drive it long distance I like doing 75. So probably it will eventualy get a injected bigblock, or 6.5 diesel with a nv4500 trans. I'll drive it like it is for now and see what I think.

I'm not sure what it is, my guess is PTO or a hydraulic parking brake.

The options are what sold me on it. If it was a striped down small window. I probably wouldn't have bid on it. It's definately long lol, but it works out good. I dont have to stretch the frame to put a rollback bed on it. What kind of MPG and top speed can I expect with the 292?

Thats the plan. Speaking of car haulers. You old dudes that weren't too stoned to remember the 60's. The guy said it was a rollback. Were rollbacks common, or do you think it was probably a ramp truck? Anyone have pics?

My C60 has the 292 but I can't say exactly what mpg it gets since the speedo doesn't work. But it seems to suck gas about like my 454 which gets 11mpg. As for speed, I spin it pretty good traveling at about 65-70....of course the C60 has 6.40 gears. Even with a 39" tire it's still low geared.

Re: 65 C30

Thanks thats kinda what I guessed. I just have to drive it, and figure out if it's something I can live with. I can put up with alot more than most people. All I need to do is drive my S10 around for a week. I'll be thrilled with 11mpg lol.

Thumbs up Re: 65 C30

It would be cool if you made it into a car hauler and hauled only 60-66 chevy/gmc trucks.

Re: 65 C30

I guessing it was originally a camper. The give away would be the extra long frame, the large big back window and custom cab option. These were not very common to tow trucks. These options would be popular to the recreational vehicle market that was in full swing in the mid 60's.

I guess it's possible it was a camper. The guy I'm getting it from, said it was a rollback for a Chevy dealer in Pennsylvania, when it was new. Then was sold to a farmer in Va that put the flat bed on it to haul hay. I'm guessing the tow truck story is right. Ive seen that push bumper on several wreckers.

Re: 65 C30

If it was a rollback truck for a dealership that probably explains the options that normally wouldn't be seen on an average rollback.....just my .02

nice panel BTW

Re: 65 C30

Ok, well the trailer I borrowed turned out to be way too heavy for the truck, I had to pull it with. Dual wheel, dual axle equipment trailer, the kind you pull behind a large dumptruck. The trailer weight empty was over the towing capacity of the truck LOL. Soooooooo I called a friend with a towtruck. I should have it here in the next few days. I did go and look at it, pay for it and all that good stuff. It has the normal rust ,but it's not in terrible shape. looks to be original paint, reverse tutone white on the bottom, with a light blue top. You can still read the lettering on the doors La (something) Bros Chevrolet. I cant rember exactly what it was. I have the attention span of a kindergardener on crack sometimes, and found other cool things to look at. The mystery bump on the dash is the PTO knob. He also gave me the accessory clock that was on the dash.

Re: 65 C30

After much aggravation. I finaly got it home. I had to put a clutch and a rear main seal in the tow truck before I could go, thats what I did friday night after work and saturday. I picked it up saturday night. This morning I gave it a bath. It's from LEFEVER BROS Chevrolet in Dillsburg PA. They are still in business. I'm going to contact them and see if anyone remembers it. If I can find a pic of it back in the day that would be sweet. It's funny how much rust pops up after you pay for something lol. Here's some pics.

I don't think there were any rollbacks in the 1960's , at least any I remember ? Of course , my memories of that time can get " fuzzy " sometimes !

Re: 65 C30

This is a really, really interesting truck. I don't remember seeing rollbacks that long ago either, but at the same time, I don't know what use the truck would be to a car dealership unless it WAS a rollback. Unless maybe it was a ramp truck used for transporting new vehicles? It would be great if the dealership has any information to solve the mystery.
