Differential Cover Advice

I spent most of the day cleaning 40 years of dirt and grime off the rear end of the 67 today. The gears and everything looks great and I am planning on painting it for the rebuild of all the suspension components in a few weeks. I thought I'd get a shiny new cover and checked around just to find there are lots of choices ranging from about $15 for a plain chrome one, to around $90 for a finned aluminum unit with a drain plug. Since the rear end already has a drain plug this means little to me. The question is, is there that much of a difference between these, or will a $15 chrome metal cover do the job just as well as a finned aluminum unit? Are there leak issues with the cheaper models? What are your thoughts?

i have just a plain chrome cover. before i glued the gasket on i scratched up the chrome where it meets the gasket so it would seal better

I'm planning on getting one that puts a pre-load on the bearings. But I'm also going to be be putting down 400+ rwhp on slicks, so I figure it will help me.

Personally , i like the stock covers painted black with 12 stainless steel bolts. The chrome covers rust too quick here in PA. The Aluminum ones are cool.
You Have a 12 bolt rear with a drain plug? Can i see a pic?

i too like the stock covers/ some of the finned aluminum ones have clearence problems with the panhard bar // chromes ones rust in less than a minute here in florida

ALOT of leaks are caused by overtightening the cover bolts causing the bolt hole to dimple outward

I've had no luck with any of the chrome ones that are out there, they all rust too quick and the steel is not as thick as the original.
If you want chrome, have your original plated by a good chrome plater and it will last for years.

I don't know if the paint would stick to the chrome, or not; but have you guys down in FL thought about shooting the chrome with a coat of "clear"?

I've done that to aluminum boat parts to keep them from oxidizing after I got all cleaned up and shiny.
