Parts ID

Well i need some help again. I would like to know if what these are. The carrier is supposed to be something like a posi, the guy i bought my truck from kept reffering to it as a "tick tock type posi". I would like to know what it is, and if it is worth putting behind my 250 and 3spd with 3.73's (currently an open diff)

The second thing is a GM 3spd of somesort.

I can go snap more pics if you guys need, or grab number off of them if you guys need. Thanks for the help.

Don't know what the "posi" is. The tranny is a long tailstock three speed. Probably from a six cylinder.

Thanks for the reply. What i was trying to determine is whether the tranny is worth keeping or if it is destined for the scrap pile. It's ALOT smaller than the 3spd in my truck.

Re: Parts ID

the posi is whats called a gov style posi that was put in to later style trucks i.e 73-80 or what ever year they stopped the 12 bolt hope that helps and i think about 400hp is there limit so you should be good.

I believe the trans. is a non-syncro trans. early GM.

Re: Parts ID

I should be good for HP if there is a 400hp limit. MY little 6 isnt stock, but it sure isn't 400hp. This is going to sound like a really dumb question, but i don't suppose i could take out my current carrier, and swap the ring gear over with whatever shims are in it now straight up, and not touch the pinion assuming my gears are in good shape. If not (which I'm assuming is the answer) where does one go about getting shims? I understand the general concept of gear shimming, and have read the guide on Richmond gear's site.

Re: Parts ID

The shims if they are in good shape should still work, the ring gear can be swapped as well you just need to make sure that the contact pattern is correct and the carrier back lash is within specs.

Ring gears and pinion gears come as a set. You cannot swap just one gear(unless you can stand the whine).

Re: Parts ID

yeah you'll be fine, he just misunderstood the question... just put some paint on the ring and spin it and check the wear pattern.

I was just thinking about it some more........ Is it not bad to set a new wear pattern on a worn set of gears?
