Worn out shock mounts

I was changing the oil and saw that the front left shock absorber had worn away the mounting hole on the frame. Is this a common problem? It chewed almost halfway through the bolt. I noticed because the shock was loose to the touch. I was thinking it might be possible to have a plate welded over the spot and redrilled to mount the shock again. Does this sound like a safe fix?

Re: Worn out shock mounts

CPP has a new shock stud and a shock renforcing bracket. The bracket is basicly the same bracket that GM used on the 4 wheel drive trucks. It will stop the stud from breaking out of the frame.

Re: Worn out shock mounts

You didn't mention if there are any suspension mods... if you're lowered (significantly), you may be banging the shocks pretty hard, and thus wallowing out the mounting hole. If this is the case, you may want to go with a shorter shock and/or pick up some shock extensions from Porterbuilt or one of the other suppliers. These raise the top shock mount above the frame to give you a new, higher mounting point.

Re: Worn out shock mounts

i've found that problem on quite a few trucks/ i get new shockstuds from speedway motors cheaf and weld large heavyduty washers to rhe frame rail to fix the damage and provide a stable mounting point

Re: Worn out shock mounts

happened on alot of the trucks weve gone through, some previous owners never really cared to tighten the shocks i guess, on my 68 we just put two jumbo washers and were able to get it to work, not relaly the best route but on a farm truck you do what you do to get by, at least it wont take any more of the frame out.

Re: Worn out shock mounts

Here are a couple of pictures of the front and rear shock reinforcing brackets. The front bracket is similar to the factory 4 wheel drive. The rear bracket is a CPP design.

Re: Worn out shock mounts

Nice, very helpful, thank you. The truck has a stock suspension, BTW. One of my friends knows a guy who does mobile welding, so I'll probably try and get ahold of him. Thanks for the help, guys.

Re: Worn out shock mounts

DKN... Can you use a stock length shock with those mounts? They don't look like there is much meat to them.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Yes you can. They are made from 3/16" steel. I think that the OE 4 wheel drive part was a little thinner than that.

It's intresting that GM recognized that the shock stud was weak and only offered a gusset on the 4 wheel drive applications leaving the 2 wheel drive trucks to break.

Re: Worn out shock mounts

Thanks for the info Danny ... next question, does CPP offer any sort of discount to board members that may not be available to anyone else?

Thanks for your support of this board by joining as a vendor.
